For the March issue of MM&M magazine, Luminary Labs CEO Sara Holoubek interviewed digital chiefs from GlaxoSmithKline, Bayer, Novartis, Sanofi, and Johnson & Johnson. The resulting story is a snapshot in time and a view of an industry at an inflection point.
Gone are the days of the internet kids convincing pharma to tweet. Today’s chief digital officers are charged with digital transformation across the entire value chain. They come to the table with deep management experience from a breadth of industries, including beauty, retail, apparel, big tech, startups, and yes, pharma.
What inspires digital executives from other industries to join pharma’s ranks? There’s something particularly interesting about health at this time. They are motivated by the opportunity to work on something meaningful (health) in a new way (digital), and in a big way (at scale). The executives we interviewed are incredibly smart — the way the rest of us wish we were smart — and they’re responsible for a breadth of activities, from the factory of the future to digital therapeutics to marketing. For the first time, we are seeing the industry as a whole think about digital and its potential in a very meaningful way.
