New Picture Book Categories and Dungeons & Dragons

March is a busy month for me.I will have all of the Summer Reading Program planned and confirmed by March 22 . Summer Reading is the biggest task in any children's librarian's life. It looms with a mix of excitement, anxiety, and enthusiasm.

While I'm working away behind the scenes, we have a couple things to unveil this month.

First, I've added three new categories to the Picture Book collection: Bedtime, School, and My Body. You can read more about it and check out lists of our most popular bedtime and school books.

Second, we're starting a Dungeons & Dragons group for middle schoolers. Please contact Tula if you have questions or know a middle schooler who would like to join the group. Her email is tbiederman@sausalito.gov.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions, requests, or anything else you would like to share.

Best,
Erin

Picture Book Categories

Since 2016, most of our picture books have been arranged by subject, and then alphabetically by author and title within each subject area. The books have colored stickers to indicate subject area, and each subject area has a sign with its name on one side and a definition on the other. There is also a sign with the colors, titles, and descriptions in the Children's Room.

These subject areas make it easier for parents and children (and librarians!) to find books about specific subjects. For example, it is easy to find books about ‘seasons’ because they're together in ‘Nature.’

In addition, about 40% of the collection is still uncategorized and we still have a ‘new’ section.

This past week, I added three new categories: Bedtime, School, and My Body.

Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have questions or thoughts about this system. It's been a successful system for us so far, and I think these new categories will make it even better.

Thanks,
Erin
