Next Meeting: Monday, April 1, 2019

Windekind Buteau-Duitschaever will be our featured demonstrator on April 1.  More details below.

Windekind is an avid woodturner, woodworker and conservationist. He's been working with wood since the mid-2000s and began turning wood in 2013.
Demo topic: From log to bowl in one turning session. Windekind will take a green wood blank and turn it to final thickness. Mounting and cutting techniques will be covered as well as the use of lights in order to gauge the final thickness of the wood bowl.

About our guest demonstrator: Windekind got started shaping wood at an early age. When he was 3 years old, his parents gave him a hatchet, which may have been a fitting gift for a child “growing up in the bush” as Windekind says. Later, summers spent with his uncle in Quebec got him started in furniture making.

Notwithstanding his early start, Windekind’s woodworking pursuit only began in earnest much later. It was while he was a PhD candidate in the Department of Geography & Environmental Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University (in Waterloo, Ontario) that he found his way into a woodworking club. Since rediscovering the joy of working in wood, he established Simply Rooted Woodshop, launched an online Etsy shop and began selling his work at craft shows throughout the Kitchener-Waterloo area.

As a full-time turner, Windekind enjoys making items such as salad bowls, fruit bowls, peppermills and other utilitarian items. He sets his work apart by creating forms that are aesthetically unique and pleasing while being useful and practical. His work has been featured on national television and can be found online and in shops and galleries throughout southern Ontario, Quebec and the Maritime provinces. Windekind is a partner in Ontario Wood, and he believes in repurposing local wood.
President's Challenge
For our April 1 meeting, the President's Challenge is to make a mushroom. In fact, you can make an entire mushroom patch because you're not limited to just one entry.

The President will judge the submissions and may award a first prize, second prize, third prize, and honourable mention.

Future Challenges will be announced on the Club's Calendar page. Keep watching that page for updates.
April 28: Kai Muenzer
Kai's work is refreshing and whimsical. He's been a featured demonstrator at the AAW Symposium and at many woodturning clubs throughout Canada and the US.
Spring has sprung and our second annual all-day woodturning demo is coming up on April 28. Treasurer John Buccioni needs to know how many TWG members will be attending so he can plan the food and refreshments. Remember: the all-day seminars are FREE to TWG members. It will cost you nothing to say to John, “Count me in!”

But other than good pizza, spicy wings and the best Timbits in the ‘hood, what’s in it for you? Who is the scheduled demonstrator, Kai Muenzer, and why should you come to see him?

Kai is from Calgary, Alberta. He’s been involved in woodturning and furniture making for many years. Kai was a featured demonstrator at the AAW’s 2018 Symposium in Portland, Oregon. That’s where TWG President Johan Geurtsen and Treasure John Buccioni met him. They were gob-smacked at Kai’s innovative woodturning ideas, his presentation skills, and how he combines woodturning and woodworking. “He’s a rising star, whose craft and design ideas need to be seen up close to be fully appreciated,” says Johan.

So put a red circle on April 28 in your calendar. Set the day aside to watch a fellow Canadian demonstrate his imaginative approach to woodturning, learn about new turning ideas, and explore how woodturning and fine furniture making can be combined. And on Monday, April 1, tell John Buccioni you’ll be there. If you can't be at Monday's meeting, send John a message via email.
News
The latest AAW e-Zine, "From the AAW Toolbox," is now available online. This edition focusses on safety, a subject that should be very important for all TWG members.

The AAW Chapter News included a link to the Totally Turning event in Sarasota, New York, which will be taking place on March 30 and 31.
The Toronto Woodturners Guild encourages all its members to join and support the AAW.
Nuggets from the 'Net
Ever wonder how they make matryoshki (Russian nesting dolls)? The technique involves careful wood preparation, unique tools, and an edible coating - ideas that may come in handy for your own box making.
Last Meeting Report
Grey-Bruce Woodturners Guild President Carl Durance showed us how to turn an egg. His demonstration included turning a solid egg as well as a thin-walled hollow egg, all completed thanks to the use of a homemade egg chuck.

Go to the TWG website's Gallery page to see photos of Carl's presentation.

Show & Tell Table
How did you achieve that finish? What kind of wood is this? Where did you buy your texturing tool? These and other questions are welcome at the S&T table. Bring your work to help spark more conversations.
Bonus: an entry at the S&T table will get you two tickets for the raffle.
