Northwestern's daily newspaper digs in on the hottest of hot topics: The possibility of Wildcats AD Phillips becoming the next Big Ten Commish. Phillips was "unreachable for comment" for the piece. MAAC Commish Ensor, who has worked with Phillips on the WBB Tourney committee, "He’s proven that he can deliver the promises that you make when you’re receiving a pretty high-profile job. He’s done that at Northern Illinois and at Northwestern. He delivers on his promises." Indiana Assoc. Vice Provost Zorn has also worked with Phillips, "His peers look at him as a very thoughtful and reasoned voice. People will ask him for his view and his opinion on things because he did such a good job on the Division I Council and just because of his history of being a very successful athletic director." Texas Tech FAR/Law Professor Shannon, who was with Phillips on the DI Council, "I don’t know if he wants to leave the campus environment to go to a commissioner’s office. But it wouldn’t surprise me at all that his name would be mentioned (for commissioner) though because of his leadership ability." (link); In a true sign of the apocalypse, there's a betting line on who will become the next B1G Commish. Top 5 options: Phillips, Deputy Commish/COO Traviolia, Assoc. Commish/CFO Suderman, Senior Assoc. Commish for Television Administration Rudner & former B1G Assoc. Commish/Big Sky Commish/current College Football Playoff COO Williams. Ohio State AD Smith, OVC Commish DeBache, Illinois AD Whitman, others also listed. (link)
The fifth & final Idaho State AD candidate was on campus yesterday in Pocatello as UW-Oshkosh (DIII) AD Sims got his shot. Sims: "I’ve never asked people for a nickel. What I do is ask people to invest in what we do. […] Our staff needs to be committed to the university as a whole, and certainly they need to stand for what we’re trying to do as an athletic department. […] I am incredibly excited about the possibility of being your athletic director. You’re right on the cusp of doing great things. I want to be the person to get you the rest of the way." (link); A decision is expected by Prez Satterlee by the end of the month, but the Idaho State Journal wastes no time endorsing Interim Bengals AD Thiros, points primarily to her longevity at ISU & an ability to raise money. (link)
In a letter to fans yesterday, Vanderbilt AD Turner focused on the positive news from the Commodores’ hoops programs, calling the WBB team’s first win over Tennessee in Knoxville a “thrill” that he hopes can "springboard" the program to future success. He added: "While it has been a challenging year for our men's and women's basketball programs, I am firmly committed to supporting the return of 'Memorial Magic.'" Turner also assured fans that athletics would feature prominently in Vandy’s capital campaign, writing: "Our commitment to progress will become more evident in the coming weeks as I will continue to work closely with Chancellor Zeppos and other key partners to finalize planning efforts surrounding our athletics strategic plan and related facility initiatives. This includes a plan for a significant portion of the university's capital campaign to raise funds for improvements to athletics programs and facilities, including the football stadium." (link)
Outgoing Wake Forest AD Wellman notes that a two-month transition timeline is lengthy, but says he fully trusts new Demon Deacons boss Currie & expects to help ease anxieties for many around the department. Wellman indicates he'll still handle all end-of-season conversations with HCs & notes the need to right the MBB situation. Further, Wellman points to the staff that's supported his leadership over the past 27 years as the thing he's most proud of, didn't have a direct say in who the next AD would be, but was kept fully in the loop as Prez Hatch bounced things off of him during the process. (linklink); More from Currie, who says he's already met with every HC one-on-one, plans to do so with all senior staff pretty soon, wants to connect with the Provost's office & other on campus to "grasp the big picture." (link)
As the legacy of outgoing Big Ten Commish Delany continues to be reviewed, Ohio State AD Smith points to the league's addition of Maryland & Rutgers as "Part of our move was to protect Penn State. Everyone forgets we had a teammate and partner institution that was on an [geographic] island, so what we did, beyond gaining exposure, is we further brought in a valued partner in Penn State. Had Penn State defected to the ACC, what would the conversation have been then?" (link); USA Today's Wolken counters, "If we are going to play that game, the Big Ten should have made a play for  Georgia Tech and Florida State when ACC schools were antsy. People shouldn’t try to defend the 2010-12 rounds of realignment and instead just admit it was haphazard and that people made decisions largely out of panic and bad information." (link)
UAlbany AD Benson has released a statement calling MLAX HC Marr’s remarks about the NCAA "inaccurate" and asserting that Marr’s position does "not represent the values or opinions of the University at Albany athletic department. I have spoken to coach Marr, and I am confident he understands the gravity of this error in judgment." Marr also apologized, "I let the emotions of the situation get the best of me. I understand that those are not the opinions of our university or our athletic department, and accept the responsibility and consequences for making those remarks." (link)
Brown Assoc. AD for Diversity & Inclusion Initiatives Hunter pens for AthleticDirectorU on "Optimizing Leadership Ability, Growth And Productivity Via Inclusion." Notable takeaways include, "Leadership has to ensure that they are including and engaging employees in an experience that the leader is proud to provide, but also one in which if leadership was a member of a marginalized group, they too would value that experience. […] The question thus becomes whether evaluating your leadership style and how you value inclusion is worth the temporary feelings of discomfort for the betterment of your organization. […] Leaders need to consider whether women in the group are packaging their dissenting opinions in a passive aggressive manner as to not appear offensive. […] Though it may sound cliché, representation matters as it becomes a lot harder to aspire to something you don’t see." More. (link)
Yahoo's Eisenberg reviews MBB programs around the nation who have the most advantageous difference in NET & RPI rankings, as well as some in the opposite direction. N.C. State at +61, Liberty +36, Florida +32, Indiana +28 & Lipscomb +26. Other end: Kansas -15, Arizona State -28, VCU -15, Toledo -26, Temple -23 & UNC Greensboro -23. (link); Florida AD Stricklin says he expects feedback from the NCAA by the end of the week on potentially moving the kick with Miami (FL) to August 24. (link); The Phil Knight Invitational will return to MBB schedules next season, but only in a one-day format in Portland with Oregon taking on Memphis & Oregon State v. Oklahoma. (link)

Your 2018-19 NACDA Under Armour ADs of the Year: Washington State's Chun, Iowa State's Pollard, UCF's White, N.C. State's Yow, Penn's Calhoun, Butler's Collier, North Carolina A&T's Hilton, North Dakota State's Larsen, Cal State Fullerton's Donovan, Florida Gulf Coast's Kavanagh, Creighton's Rasmussen & Gonzaga's Roth. (link)
Penn AD Calhoun's chair now known as the "T. Gibbs Kane, Jr. W'69 Director of Athletics and Recreation position" thanks to a "significant endowment gift" from the Kane family. Additionally, and importantly, "the Kanes have established a fund that will provide increased monetary bonuses to head coaches and assistant coaches who lead their programs to Ivy League championships." Both gifts go toward the Game Onward Campaign for the Future of Penn Athletics that now counts over $112M stacked toward a $150M goal. (link)
Stadium's Goodman ranks the 10 best MBB HC hires in the last decade, notes the AD who made the move & if a search firm was involved. 10) Providence's Cooley (Driscoll / none); 9) Tennessee's Barnes (Hart / Turner); 8) Nevada's Musselman (Knuth / none); 7) First Marquette, then Virginia Tech's Williams (Cottingham / Babcock / no search firm on either occasion); 6) Houston's Sampson (Rhoades / Schemmel); 5) Former Xavier HC Mack (Bobinski / none); 4) Iowa State's Hoiberg (Pollard / none); 3) Texas Tech's Beard (Hocutt / Fogler); 2) Kentucky's Calipari (Barnhart / none); and, 1) Virginia's Bennett (Littlepage / none). (link); Littlepage recalls pinging former NCAA executive Jernstedt & former Pacific/USC coach Morrison, both of whom independently endorsed Bennett. Littlepage says he's not sure he could have predicted this type of success for the Cavs, but, "What I did know was that he had a plan and a style, and what he stood for both on and off the court. I thought he was the right fit at Virginia. There was no doubt in my mind of that." (link)
Following comments from U.S. District Court Judge Kaplan concerning former Louisville MBB HC Pitino’s culpability in the MBB-FBI probe, Pitino’s attorney pushed back, saying: "Pitino has no tracks that need covering. There are other recordings where they say no one, including Pitino, knows anything about these payments. The fact is, the defendants drop Pitino’s name when they think it will get them more money from a purported investor in this scheme. They dared not actually call Pitino at any time (which they could have done) because he would have immediately exposed them. They know this." In a text message from Greece, Pitino himself once again maintained his innocence, adding: "The Southern District of New York used me for publicity, the University of Louisville buried a Hall of Fame career. Let me rest in peace. Please, you have killed enough of my life." (link)
San Diego Union-Tribune columnist Zeilger examines San Diego State MBB student-athlete Hemsley’s journey to cope with depression and anxiety, which Hemsley explains was largely a secret even from his coaches. "There were times...it would be hard for me to practice, hard for me to be out there. … Or I’d be in class and suddenly I felt like I wanted to cry." In starting to overcome depression’s crippling effects, Hemsley says he learned how to "search within" and to forgive himself for his vulnerabilities while eliminating distractions and triggers. "I know I have to stay present." When his playing days are over, Hemsley envisions himself helping others to overcome their own personal struggles. "Basketball has always been a dream and will continue to be a dream. But while I’m here and alive on this planet, I want to help people. I want to put a smile on people’s faces." (link)
More Personnel: SEC Commish Sankey goes to bat for a third AC in Baseball. Rationale: Best to give departments autonomy on the decision, having another full-time AC will benefit student-athlete wellness, more recruiting bandwidth for coaching staffs & the right pro dev move for the volunteers-turned-full ACs. (link); Cal Poly MBB HC Callero will not return. (link); The CFP adds Illinois Assoc. AD for Event Management Stalcup as Dir. of Stadium and Game Operations. She starts April 1. (link); Baylor FB HC Rhule explains why interviewing for other jobs can help you with your current one: "When you go through these interviews, it makes you re-think what’s your philosophy. I’m sitting there talking to somebody about what I would do and it makes you say to yourself, ‘What do I really believe in? What’s important to me?’ That part of it refines your own philosophy when you go back to your job, and I think it makes you better." (link); Forbes' list of the richest people in the world is out. All sorts of names with ties to college athletics, starting with the Kochs at #10 & #11. (link)
Maryland AD Evans says the Terps have a majority of the recommendations from the McNair probe already in place to better support student-athletes & hopes to have the rest on the books in the next couple of months. Athletic Training consultant Walters, who was part of the review, "I’m very impressed. I think the fact that they’ve embraced this — the way Dr. Loh came forward, the way Damon has come forward — the response has been good, the feedback has been good." (link)
Memphis AD Bowen intimated he is open to scheduling two-for-one FB series with 'Power 5' programs to ensure the Tigers gets a home matchup. In a presentation to trustees, Bowen explained that Memphis’ ascension as one of the top 'Group of 5' teams has made scheduling more difficult. Attendance has subsequently declined in recent years, although ticket revenue did increase from $3M in 2017 to $3.3M last year. Bowen also acknowledged that the $10M buyout paid to former MBB HC Smith lowered the university’s financial rating, but asserted the rating remains at an acceptable level. (link)
USC has wrapped up its eight-year 'Heritage Initiative' Campaign to the tune of $748M in the form of support for facilities, scholarships, academic pursuits & community outreach. How about this: "The USC athletic department's initiative raised more than double its original fundraising goal of $300 million. A remarkable 29,175 donors contributed to Athletics' total." (link); Washington State's FY19 projects a $7.2M deficit, $1.2M more than originally forecasted. (link)
USA Today’s Armour predicts that "someone is eventually going to die" if the NCAA doesn’t put a stop to students and fans rushing the court or field after big victories. To support her position, Armour points out, among several other examples, Wisconsin’s 1993 victory over Michigan, when more than five dozen fans were injured, including 10 who were "unconscious and not breathing when they were rescued." Armour also notes that, in addition to the "crush of humanity," vitriol hurled toward opposing players could result in the eruption of violence. To put an end to the practice, Armour suggests the loss of scholarships or prohibiting offending schools from participating in NCAA championships. "Harsh penalties? Sure. But something has to be done. Before it’s too late." (link); Accordingly, how did Purdue MBB student-athlete Haarms restrain from knocking out a Minnesota fan who stormed the court Tuesday night and shoved his middle finger and his cell phone in Haarms' face? (link)
Facilities: New Mexico State AD Moccia doesn't expect a massive increase to the state outlay of cash ($146K received last year vs. request of $2.305M this year), but has identified eight upgrade/repair projects that would move the Aggies forward. Interesting chart at the bottom shows outlay disparity between NMSU & UNM over the years. (link); Check out this animated video of the new Xtreme Arena, which will play host to Iowa Volleyball once it's complete. (link); Arkansas leaders a step closer to renaming the court at Bud Walton Arena after former MBB HC Richardson.  (link)
Also Noticed: Texas teams up with Game Plan to provide "additional tools in its student development program." (link); Virginia will restrict single-game tickets for its FB game against in-state rival Virginia Tech to $100+ donors and season ticket holders. (link); Stanford Volleyball student-athletes made headlines for drawing the Stanford tree with a gun pointed at Herbie Husker following last year's national championship game between SU and Nebraska. The team will perform community service in an effort to make amends for the incident and will bring an olive branch to Lincoln when the two teams play there in September for the start of a five-year home-and-home series. (link); FuboTV will stream all of the upcoming MBB NCAA tournament games and some live in 4K. (link); First the NFL, now Goldman Sachs is "loosening" its dress code to be more "flexible." Company-wide email did note "Casual dress is not appropriate every day and for every interaction and we trust you will consistently exercise good judgment in this regard. All of us know what is and is not appropriate for the workplace." (link); Recently dismissed Oklahoma State MBB student-athletes Weathers, Calloo and Jones have been charged with nine counts of malicious injury to property stemming from a Jan. 1 incident. Details here on how the group used air rifles to shoot and damage cars and buildings. (link)
