Hello and welcome to our Spring Newsletter!
Hooray, Spring is finally here! Even if it has arrived in a rather blustery fashion and after February spoilt us with record temperatures. Here in Suffolk we are enjoying the early Daffodils, Cherries, Camellias and Magnolias are starting to open too.
It's time to get planting for summer. Along with sowing annual seeds you can also plant summer flowering bulbs. Here are some of our picks of the month to get planted up in pots or in the ground to give you a burst of colour later in the summer. And with Mother's Day coming up Bulbs make a great gift too!
The charming Belladonna Lily has large scented pink flowers in late autumn. Also know as the Naked Lady because the flowers appear before the leaves. This South African beauty can be grown outdoors in a very sunny and sheltered spot in well-drained soil. In front of a South-facing wall is ideal. Plant bulbs now.
For heady fragrance in the garden or cut flowers in the house Lilies are hard to beat! They are easy to grow they just like a fertile soil and some supports and away they go! Cat owners just be aware though that Lillies are toxic to cats. Plant Lily Bulbs now.
Acidanthera bicolor 'Murielae' or Peacock Orchid is a tall, elegant bulbous perennial which will grace any garden. with its fragrant white flowers in September-October. These make a great specimen for a pot
Nerine sarniensis is a beautiful bulbous plant from South Africa, sporting brilliant red flowers late in the year. This relative of the better known bowdenii is frost tender, and needs a little more care in cultivation. Grow them in pots of well-drained gritty compost, and avoid letting them get wet in their dormant period. Outdoors, place against a south-facing wall under the house eaves, or keep in an airy frost-free greenhouse all year round.
We also have hardier varieties of Nerine (Guernsey Lily) just click here to take a look.

Bees and other polinating insects will love the false Mallow Sidalcea Elsie Heugh  and it's a real cottage garden favorite too. A beautiful border perennial with spires of delicate pink flowers in June and July. For well drained soil in full sun. Can grow successfully on chalky soils. Height 90cm
If you have a difficult, dry shady spot needing effective ground cover why not try Epimedium youngianum 'Niveum'? It's a brilliant perennial for such situations with masses of dainty white flowers in spring, over colourful foliage. Ideal for underplanting trees and shrubs.
Looking for something for a damp or boggy area? How about Iris louisiana 'Black Gamecock' This is a superb Iris for a water garden or bog garden with velvety, deep purple flowers in late spring-early summer. The erect leaves make an excellent habitat for emerging Dragonfly Larvae giving them somewhere to complete their transformation before taking flight
We love Crocosmia 'Okavango' with its large peachy-orange flowers from late summer to autumn. Bred by Planstman Bob Brown we love this recent introduction! Looks great with other late flowering perennials and ornamental Grasses. Grow in moist, well drained soil in full sun or part shade. Good for coastal or exposed gardens.
It's time to plant Dahlia tubers. Find out more here
Dahlia 'Eveline'  is beautifully subtle with its ivory flowers with just the lightest touch of lilac. It would greatly suit a twilight or mindful style planting. The petals are arranged so intricately you could look at them for hours!
Dahlia 'Chat Noir' A semi-cactus type which looks great planted in big groups. Large dark red flowers to 15cm across with a darker centre from July to the first frosts. A great cut flower and a proven old favorite.
Dahlia 'Vincent' This is a compact Dahlia so ideal for a smaller garden or even a container. The creamy-yellow flowers flushed with orange make for an eye-catching pop of colour. Height 60cm
Dahlia 'Glorie van Heemstede' Waterlily Dahlia with clear lemon yellow flowers from July-September. It really stands out so good for drawing the eye towards the back of the border.
