THE HIGHLIGHTS

Mark Zuckerberg is hitting ‘reboot.’

THE BACKGROUND.

Over the past year, Facebook’s had a few problems. Read: a lot. It all started when it came out that Facebook allowed Cambridge Analytica - a political consulting firm - to access the data of millions of Facebook users. Followed by the news that certain countries - like Russia - were using the platform to try to influence the elections of other countries - like the US and the UK. Plus Myanmar’s gov had been using Facebook for years to spread propaganda about Rohingya Muslims - in an attempt to validate violence against the group. Then there’ve been the hacks and trials and testimonies - and a call to #DeleteFacebook. You get the picture.

THE HAPPENINGS.

Yesterday, Mark Zuckerberg took to Facebook to reassure the world he’s got everything under control. Then laid out a plan to connect the words “privacy first” and “Facebook.” Includes encrypted messages - which Zuckerberg says he sees as the future of social media - and integrating Facebook with Instagram and WhatsApp. He also reminded everyone what a success Instagram Stories are - and says disappearing content is in Facebook’s future.

THE REACTION.

Skeptical. As in “privacy” and “security” aren’t exactly the first things you think of when you hear the word “Facebook.” Not yet clear what this new Facebook would look like. What is clear: a third of the world uses Facebook. Meaning these new changes have the potential to impact billions of people.

SO…?

Facebook’s trying to make a 180° turn from its far-from-great 2018. TBD, TBD, TBD.

THE ACTION

POLITICS: Yesterday, the Democratic National Committee said ‘we’re too cool for you’ and announced that they won’t let Fox News host a primary debate. This comes after The New Yorker released a not-so-complimentary report about the Trump team and Fox News. Speaking of which, all eyes are on Paul Manafort. You know Manafort for being Trump’s former campaign manager who’s been in the spotlight lately for doing some shady things. Now, he’s expected to be sentenced. Suspense, thick. Meanwhile, the US’s trade deficit hit $891 billion last year - a record high. The reasons: new tax cuts, a trade war with China, and the global economic slowdown. This comes as the Prez is trying to promote buying American.

PEOPLE: Yesterday, Alex Trebek - aka the host of “Jeopardy!” - announced he’s been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic cancer is known for being one of the worst kinds of cancer, with a 5-year survival rate of 9%. Trebek says he plans to “beat the low survival rate statistics” and is “going to fight.” In other news, for the first time in history, an all-female crew - made up of two NASA astronauts and a Canadian flight controller - will conduct a spacewalk at the International Space Station. Women’s History Month, starting off right.

WORLD: Huawei’s not happy. Reminder: you know Huawei for being the Chinese telecommunications biz that’s been labelled a national security threat by the US gov. And months ago, the US passed  a law that keeps Huawei off the American shelf. Now, Huawei’s saying ‘so not fair’ and suing. Meanwhile, the US is revoking the visas of dozens of Venezuelans with ties to Nicolas Maduro - Venezuela’s current leader. This comes as Maduro’s kicking out a German ambassador who’s shown support for Juan Guaido - the guy who swore himself in as interim prez. In other news, an Iranian human rights lawyer was just convicted after defending women protesting Iran’s rules around mandatory head scarves. Stay tuned.

WHAT TO KNOW

$10,000:” how much this woman won in a hidden contest after reading the fine print on her insurance policy. Note to self: read all fine print.

SAY WHAT?

“Flip-flop fines introduced in Italy's Cinque Terre” - an actual headline. Heavy news day for Cinque Terre.
