Spring Adventures

Hello, Friend.

We may be at the tail end of winter but for much of the country it sure hasn't felt very spring-like. A bit of overwhelm seems to be affecting many, and we can't help but wonder if the two are somewhat related. Stick with it, folks. Warmer days are coming, along with lots of sunshine and vitamin D.

Handling Anxiety

Anxiety has hit the news in a variety of ways lately as well. For adults, politics, job stresses, or seasonal affective disorder (SAD) can all be contributing factors. Youth struggle with anxiety as well. For them, homework pressures, relational difficulties, performance insecurities in regards to grades or sports often play a part.

We recently wrote a blog post addressing anxiety in youth. In it, we discuss the various types of anxiety kids face, what it does, and how to help your child through their anxiety. We've also included a free download with some really helpful activities for you to do with the youth in your lives. Check it out below!

Community Responses in the Wake of Catastrophic Events

The aftermath of trauma continues for years in waves, and there’s no one quite as familiar with the complexities of “finding a new normal" as Cheri Lovre, founder and director of Crisis Management Institute. For the past 40 years, she has responded to community tragedies: from school shootings and suicide clusters to raging floodwaters and hurricane devastation. She spent 2 years in NYC to aid in the recovery from 9/11. And always, she sees the ripple out effect such tragedy brings to an entire community. It's what prompted her to create our 5 Radical Minutes prevention program.

In the wake of three suicides these past 10 days following mass casualty events in both Parkland, Florida and Newtown, Connecticut, it’s readily apparent that these trauma waves can continue to spread further out from an event than most people may realize.

Cheri’s recent article addresses this long second wave of trauma, and gives communities specific ideas on how to forge a path forward — together.

From the Students

We've heard from thousands of students in recent weeks and there's been a resounding theme: they want to learn how to make friends. Whether they're shy, stuck in the wrong friend-group, or curious about others around them, most students wish someone would help them make more (and better!) friends.

This is music to our ears! One of the foundations of 5 Radical Minutes is to teach people how to connect with one another. We've known that students need this skill, but it's exciting to know that so many of them want it!

Friend, have a wonderful start to your Spring. May all the newness and freshness inspire you to be your very best self. We wish you a courageous week!
