We have several events coming up in the next few weeks and hope you will attend both the Asian Studies Awards Event and the festival celebrating Japanese culture. Also, information about courses that address Asia in Fall 2019 is now available. Check out the opportunities below.

Student Research on Asia and Awards
Come to the Asian Studies Awards Celebration on Friday, March 29, at 1:00 in the Mortar Board room in the Ferg (3107). Recipients of the 2019 Asian Studies Research Awards will present their award-winning papers, and we will have the presentation of the 2019 Asian Studies Outstanding Student Award. Come to kick off Honors Week, learn about Asia, and chat with faculty and students at the reception to follow. More information is available on the Asian Studies website.

Experience Examples of Japanese Cultures
Taiko drums, origami, the tea ceremony, and calligraphy will be some of the elements of Japanese cultures on display and being performed at the 2019 Cherry Blossom / Sakura festival in Tuscaloosa. Come enjoy the performances and participate in the various activities on Saturday, March 23 from 9-noon at the Riverside Market.

Courses for Fall 2019
Registration for Fall 2019 is about to begin. You can fulfill a variety of your core courses with Asia related classes like

You can also take several upper level courses on China and India, including

Everyday Lives in Contemporary China (ANT 450)

Art of Imperial China (ARH 355), a W course

Chinese Literature in Translation (CHI 350)

History of Contemporary China (HY 338)

Religion and Identity in South Asia (REL 321)
All of these courses also count towards the Asian Studies minor, along with language courses above 300. Of course, lower level courses in Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Hindi, and others count towards the core foreign language requirement as well as the Asian Studies ancillary requirement of two semesters of a language associated with Asia.
