CELEBRATING WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
In celebration of Women's History Month and International Women's Day, the Ohio Arts Council is highlighting some of the amazing work created by women artists throughout the state. We asked the women of the OAC to share some of their favorite pieces, and here's what they chose:
The Albatross by Emily Sullivan Smith (Kettering, Ohio)
2017, Relief print, 35.5” x 63.5”
"The reason I chose this work is Emily’s commentary on pollution and its effect on the environment and wildlife."
- Alexa Demyan, Ohio Arts Council's Riffe Gallery Marketing and Exhibitions Fellow
Frauenkirchen Mono 1 by Corrie Slawson (Cleveland, Ohio)
2011, Intaglio & Photo Litho,
45 cm x 30 cm (Photo by Don Snyder)
"This piece from Corrie’s Dresden Exchange residency hangs in our office space. I love the series and her interpretation of the city."
- Katie Monahan, Communications Strategist
#456a, Summer Air II (blue) by Janice Lessman-Moss (Kent, Ohio)
©7/16, silk, linen, paper core, digital jacquard, hand woven TC2 loom, painted warp, 11.5" x 12.5"
"I admire Janice’s work because I love the way she plays with color and shape simultaneously, begging you to stare at the weaving for hours studying how the shapes and colors interact. As a new weaver myself, I am constantly inspired by her work."
- Janelle Hallett, Organizational Programs Coordinator
Punctuations by Leah Wong
(Columbus, Ohio)
2017, Ink acrylic, hand-cut Tyvek paper, 60" x 60"
"Leah's work is mesmerizing. I love the intricate details and how the combination of shadow, light, paper, and paint create a new kind of landscape for the viewer to explore. Leah's paper cuts intentionally infuse aspects of calligraphy and symbolism into a larger pattern, so it's fun to try and find all the hidden characters in the piece."
- Amanda Etchison, Communications Strategist
