December 14, 2019: Save the Date for GO's Benefit Concert

We're pleased to announce that Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrow, First Lady of Belize, will join the GO community in Boston this December 14 for our 4th Annual Longwood Symphony Orchestra (LSO) Benefit Concert.

Mrs. Barrow will receive the Global Oncology Visionary Award for her work to improve cancer prevention and care in her native country of Belize and the greater Caribbean region.
Mrs. Barrow's partnership with GO is two-fold:
  1. Advocating for the establishment of Belize's first publicly accessible, comprehensive cancer care unit at the country's national hospital
  2. Working to eliminate cervical cancer throughout the Caribbean region using GO's comic book on the HPV vaccine as a key tool
Mark your calendar for a fabulous evening of classical music by the medical musicians of the LSO. Stay tuned for details.

Help get GO's comic book into the hands of teens in LMICs

In 2018, GO released our comic book designed for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) about cervical cancer and the importance of getting the HPV vaccine. This health education tool has received wide interest from partners Africa, India and the Caribbean for its potential to increase vaccine uptake and decrease avoidable deaths from cervical cancer.

Please support GO's work to put our comic book in the hands of school-aged youth in LMICs. Let's work to eradicate cervical cancer as we have smallpox. Because nobody should die of a preventable disease.

Donate now, or take advantage of an upcoming match offered on April 8-12 through Global Giving. Stay tuned!

Enabling Publicly Accessible Cancer Care in Belize

Together with the country's only oncologist (above right) and staff at the national hospital in Belize City (above left), GO has made great strides this year towards launching the country's first-ever, publicly accessible and comprehensive cancer care unit.

In January, GO led a training of a team of nurses, medical officer and pharmacist in chemotherapy administration. This focus-group of local professionals is working hand-in-hand with GO to establish the systems and protocols needed to open a treatment unit in coming weeks.

A key feature of this facility is GO's Directly Observed Care program--a patient navigation model for accompanying patients throughout their care journey, proactively removing barriers to accessing care, and ensuring the best possible outcomes.

"As a GO volunteer, I learned quickly that a project can emerge through determination, interdisciplinary collaboration, and an unwillingness to accept the status quo – and through persistence, can have an impact beyond what you ever imagined." Read more

Mentor Mixer: GO-YP @ Brigham Young University

The GO-Young Professional Alliance chapter at Brigham Young University held its first Mentor Mixer in Feb 2019 to match students interested in oncology research and care with mentors in the field.
Nine mentors were in attendance: 3 physicians, 3 representatives from on-campus research organizations including professors who conduct cancer-related investigative work, and 3 representatives from local cancer care organizations. Student attendees numbered 70-80, making this the largest Mentor Mixer held by a GO-YP group. Congratulations BYU!
If you'd like to hold a Mentor Mixer at your own institution and could use some guidance, contact us today!
Thank you for taking a moment to learn about GO's progress in this first quarter of 2019. If you have feedback of any kind or would like to get involved in our work, please don't hesitate to reach out.

And if you're so inspired, please give your financial support to help improve cancer prevention and care where they're needed most.

With gratitude for your continued partnership,

The Global Oncology Team
