Our March blog posts for parents and teachers  focus on dependability and reliability.  By creating structure and routine and making life (mostly) predictable for our students and children, we build the foundation for trust that they need to eventually grow into reliable and dependable adults. When young people experience trusting, reliable relationships with caring adults, they build skills for healthy relationships that they will use for their whole lives. Read below for more information, and you can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter for more daily ideas.

SOUND DISCIPLINE CHAMPIONS

The Talbot Hill Elementary Mindfulness Room

Talbot Hill Elementary Mindfulness Room
Guiding Principles:

A place everyone is welcome
Positive space to be used in a proactive manner
A space to breathe, calm the mind and set intentions
A space to process problems, regulate behavior and then return to class
A space to be successful when being in another space isn’t working
A space to be heard
A space for real talk

This space is NOT to be used for:
Punishment
A place to serve consequences
Sound Discipline is recognizing Talbot Hill Elementary School in Renton as a Champion for their intentional work developing a ‘Mindfulness Room’ in their school. The Talbot Hill ‘Mindfulness Room’ was born out of a desire to create a space where all students (and staff) could go to address social-emotional needs. It provides a safe place to recharge and regulate before returning to the learning environment, and aligns with school improvement efforts to follow trauma-informed practices to best serve students and staff members. This space removes barriers to academic success by addressing and responding to the social-emotional needs of students that might otherwise impede their learning.

The Mindfulness Room is where students can breathe, exercise, and most importantly, regulate, before re-entering their classroom. The team’s vision is to have a room with a Zen-like feel, including relaxing music, dimmed lights, yoga mats and cards, exercise balls, jump ropes, comfortable seating, and different sensory and art options.  Using these tools and supports, students regulate and rejuvenate, leaving ready to connect and learn.

In taking care of students’ mental and physical health, Talbot Hill staff are caring for the whole child. Thank you, Talbot Hill, for addressing the social-emotional learning and health of students. You are are creating a solid foundation on which learning can be built.
WHAT WE ARE READING
The Monk and the Yak by Ori Avnur
The Monk and the Yak was written in Ladakh, India, inspired by the towering peaks of the Himalayas. It tells the story of a lonely monk and his huge, hairy yak, who live together peacefully in the mountains. One stormy, snowy winter the monk is assailed by a mysterious illness and finds himself in dire straits. It is then that the yak proves himself to be a loyal friend with a heart of gold.
Abuela by Arthur Dorros
Join Rosalba and her grandmother, her abuela, on a magical journey as they fly over the streets, sights, and people of New York City, which sparkles below. The story is narrated in English, and sprinkled with Spanish phrases, as Abuela points out places that they explore together. This lovely book is also available in Spanish, sprinkled with English phrases.
