MBB-FBI: "It was a [expletive] hell of a [expletive] offer. Hell of an offer. […] Especially for a kid who is going to be a two- or three-year kid." The Yahoo trio of Wetzel, Forde & Thamel drop another bombshell as those words were reportedly said by LSU HC Wade to former agency runner Dawkins in a wiretapped conversation. The student-athlete in questions is Tigers freshman Smart. More from Wade to Dawkins, "I’ll be honest with you, I’m [expletive] tired of dealing with the thing. Like I’m just [expletive] sick of dealing with the [expletive]. Like, this should not be that [expletive] complicated." ESPN's Schlabach reveals another conversation in which Wade says the offer was better than the NBA league minimum. (link, link); Local reporters asked Wade to respond not long after the Yahoo report was released. Wade said he'd have to take a close look before discussing anything. Tigers AD Alleva declined to comment later in the day. (link); The roll continued with news Creighton AC Murphy & TCU AC Barker accepted bribes from Dawkins. However, no additional charges have been added to the docket. Dawkins' attorney takes exception with how the case is being tried, calls it "selective prosecution." Bluejays AD Rasmussen also with no comment. (linklink)
Oregon AD Mullens on the Pac-12's revenue challenges compared to its 'Power 5' peers, "We have to figure out how to close that gap. Resources do matter. We don’t have to have everything that everyone else has but we have to remain in a range that makes us competitive. And right now, we’re drifting out of range." Mullens also points to an enhanced MBB post-season tournament with Las Vegas as the host, not yet sure where it stands on moving the FB championship tilt to Sin City, says clearly that FB success is the main economic driver for the Ducks. (link)
Southern Conference MBB is having a banner season, led by a quartet of high-flying programs. Commish Iamarino looks back on the $1M fund the league setup, $600K of which came from College of Charleston's exit for the Colonial, to buoy hoops. Described as "an 'enhancement pool' that rewarded programs for hitting benchmarks in scheduling, winning and RPI improvement; and a line of credit to help teams buy guarantee games at home, take international trips and host multi-team events." Iamarino says there's no scheduling mandate, but that programs organically have upgrade their non-conference slates, also points to upgrading ESPN production & schools paying good HCs more to ensure they stick around longer as keys to success. (link)
The Knight Commission rolls-out its revamped College Athletics Financial Information (CAFI) database. Here's the proposed value prop: "The new resource provides unprecedented access to athletics revenues, expenses, and debt as well as institution-wide academic spending for more than 220 public NCAA Division I colleges and universities dating back to 2005. The free, open-access database provides telling documentation of major college sports finances, at a time when institutions face lawsuits to direct more financial benefits to student-athletes." Finally a bit of movement in the Disney/Fox RSN sell-off & it looks like Amazon is fully getting in the game as multiple reports say YES Network is getting sold to the New York Yankees as the main shareholder for $3.4B. Sinclair, Amazon, RedBird, Mubadala & Blackstone all also involved. (link, link)
The controversial Pepper Hamilton reports at Baylor may have to be released. U.S. District Court Judge Pitman: "If Pepper Hamilton objects to production of any specific documents, or any objections on jurisdictional grounds, Pepper Hamilton must file a motion with this court detailing those objections no later than March 15, 2019. Absent such a motion, Pepper Hamilton shall file a notice with this court certifying that production to plaintiffs is complete no later than March 15, 2019." (link)
It's official: Florida-Miami (FL) FB will kick off the 2019 season on August 24th in Orlando. (link); The Ivy League inks its most comprehensive sponsorship deal ever as TIAA is now the presenting sponsor of the post-season hoops tournaments. (link); With the Big Sky Conference coming off a disappointing three-year run for its basketball championships in Reno, league associate commissioner for championships and media partnership Kasper talks about new host Boise as a better fit: "No. 1, it’s in driving distance for more of our fan bases. No. 2, Boise is just so much more of a Big Sky city. We just get a sense that there are so many more of our alumni there. ...Why didn’t it work in Reno? Well, it’s something our fan base wasn’t used to, it wasn’t drivable, and we didn’t get local support, bottom line." (link)

Add North Carolina Congressman Walker to the list of lawmakers around the nation who are introducing bills that would allow student-athletes to profit from their name, image & likeness. Walker's push will be titled the 'Student-Athlete Equity Act' & comes with strategic timing around March Madness. Walker: "It’s just odd that in our free market system that this is the one area where we say, 'No. We'll let you make money for the university, but you can’t have any access to your name or likeness.' This is an earning opportunity for 99% of these student athletes who will never have another access to do something like this. It's in that moment that your earning opportunity is prime." (link)
How many hoops HCs have led both MBB & WBB programs at the DI level. Maine MBB HC Barron talks about his unique path with ESPN's Adelson in a larger piece about hiring challenges for minorities. Barron: "There's a risk in taking any job. There's a risk coming to Maine in the first place. There's a risk not taking other jobs. There's a risk in staying too long. So I have enough confidence in my abilities, and our abilities collectively, to do this job that it's worth the risk that we're taking. This is not something I planned. And I don't know if 20 years from now I'm still living in Maine or retiring as the basketball coach here. But right now, I see this as a job that needs to be done for a group of people that I care about and that I'm capable of doing the job." Lots more. (link)
ESPN's Borzello with a comprehensive look at the starting-to-turn MBB HC carousel with the major storylines of the continued MBB-FBI impact, the future of Kansas HC Self, who does UCLA hire?, a seeming lack of big name candidates & if the NBA will pull anyone from the college game. Borzello has Nebraska, Texas A&M, Wake Forest & Washington State as "likely to open." Boston College, Cal, SMU, UNLV as "could go either way." More. (link); On the heels of his best MBB HC hires of the last decade, Stadium's Goodman goes to the other end of the spectrum. Half used search firms. A handful of schools and ADs made both lists. (link)
Fox Sports North's McLeod, who serves as play-by-play man for the network's coverage of Minnesota Men's Hockey, was pulled mid-game from a broadcast of the Minnesota state high school championships after referencing lynching ropes. From Awful Announcing, "McLeod was scheduled to call the best-of-three series vs. Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament on Fox Sports North, but you’d imagine that isn’t happening and the station will likely put out a statement." (link)
More Personnel: Syracuse MBB HC Boeheim has been cleared of any wrongdoing in the fatal accident from last month. (link); Kent State Director of Golf/Men's Golf HC Page will retire in July. AHC Mills will take over. (link); Former Georgia Equestrian AC O'Toole has sued the Georgia Board of Regents, claiming she was fired in May 2018 for being pregnant. Utah FB HC Whittingham nas a new five-year deal, $4M the first season with $200K increases annually. Bonuses for staying under budget. (link); The Presidential Search Committee at Colorado, along with search firm Wheless Partners, has narrowed the list to 10 candidates. Interviews this month will narrow the pool to five in April with a final recommendation coming next month, as well. (link); Western Carolina has its presidential candidate pool down to three finalists. New leader expected to be announced by May at the latest, with a start date of "around" July 1. (link)
Missouri has purchased billboard space in the likes of St. Louis & Kansas City with the message of "Make It Right" in reference to the NCAA's recent ruling. The Tigers have also leveraged #MakeItRight on social media as MU AD Sterk notes, "This case really cuts at the core and the foundation of the NCAA. I’m not sure what happens, but it’s not a place that I want to happen. That’s why we are being really vocal. […] They need to get this right on the appeal. For intercollegiate athletics to function at the level we would all like it to, they need cooperation. They need people to be trustworthy and report violations, just like we did. […] We need to be respectful, but aggressive." (link)
As part of his 'From the Desk of Your AD' series, Arkansas boss Yurachek introduces Hogs fans to a new Baseball tailgating option in what looks like shipping containers fitted out as nice little private tailgating units. Scroll all the way down to have a look. Specifically, "...each unit features space for serving food and beverages, a television, a leather sofa, a grill and an 8-feet by 20-feet observation deck. Each tailgating unit includes 50 tickets." Cost: $600 to $1,500. (link)
North Dakota State System Chancellor Hagerott pushed back on state legislation that would legalize sports gambling, calls student-athletes "vulnerable." Bismarck Rep. Dockter indicates legalization is intended only for big-time college contests & professional sports, but it's not entirely clear in the article if state institutions would end up being in play. (link)
Inside Higher Ed with a deep survey from college & university presidents, athletics mentioned just once - only 51% say they were fully prepared to deal with athletics issues when they assumed leadership - but there's a bunch of additional data points of interest. A couple of notables: Just 48% say they had the necessary fundraising acumen, 57% are confident in their institution's financial standing, 81% indicate race relations are sound on their campus, but believe the same for only 25% of other schools. More.  (link)
Pretty compelling read from Recode on where Facebook could be going with Founder/CEO Zuckerberg recently saying privacy is the core tenant of his platform. Recode's Wagner: "One thing to keep in mind: Facebook can’t merge all of its individual messaging apps until, at a minimum, they’re all end-to-end encrypted. That can be a lengthy process; it took WhatsApp years to fully roll it out. It may not take that long this time around, and one source inside Facebook said the goal is to make some noticeable movements on this merging process during the second half of 2019. But this entire transition to more encryption and more privacy won’t be done anytime soon." (link)
Also Noticed: The College Football Playoff has partnered with Teamworks to "power the national championship game." (link); Maryland renews with Aspire Sport Marketing. Since partnering up in 2011 the Terps have seen $13.5M in new ticket revenue. (link); Cal Baptist is not eligible for NCAA basketball postseason competition for either it's MBB or WBB teams as the Lancers are in their first season of DI transition, but has "been in communication with two post-season tournaments for both our basketball teams" according to AD Parker, who also notes the MBB squad has been invited to host a first-round game already. The MBB team could go to the CBI or CIT while the women to the WNIT or WBI. (link); Two Duke FB senior walk-on student-athletes and engineering majors used 3D technology to treat teammate/QB Jones' broken collar bone. (link); Ohio State Prez Drake expects the investigation into sexual abuse allegations by former team physician Strauss to end in "six to eight weeks." (link)
Correction: I noted yesterday that incoming Wake Forest AD Currie had already met with every Deacs HC. That's incorrect, though he does plan to do so in the very near future.
