Benefits & Pension Association Plan for MCA Member Camps
|
|
After some conversation with a couple camps not having a benefits program with their camp (small staff base, high cost, etc.) I investigated the possibility with MCA’s benefits provider about creating a Benefit plan for member camps in our association. It is possible.
Here is some information for you to ponder, discuss with your board and let me know if you are interested. We need a certain number of camps involved to move forward so please let me know either way.
Here is a sample plan design (not exactly how it would be but a place to start from) so you are aware of some possibilities.
There are 37 camps in total. In order to be able to initiate an association plan we would likely need around 50% participation of those camps in order for the insurance carriers to look at offering some coverage.
- In addition to the above, camps would be able to get coverage for full time permanent employees and part time permanent employees as long as they are working a minimum of 20 hours/week. Seasonal staff would not be able to access benefits.
- Camps with 2+ permanent employees will be no problem to include in the coverage, however camps with only 1 permanent employee may be more difficult to include. There are some options to make this available for the camps that have the one employee situation, so please let me know if as an individual employee you have interest in joining the plan in the first place.
The goal is to offer employees some additional incentive on top of salary that can help support you and your families. What creating an association plan like this will achieve is adding some economies of scale to smaller plans that may be in force. With a larger plan we take advantage of more lives being insured on the plan, reducing the overall plan usage risk which will hopefully result in each individual paying less in annual premiums.
What we would like to start off with as a beginning template is a very generic plan design that was created for us and is attached. If there is enough interest, the next step would require a brief business description of each camp with information on how long they have been a camp, funding methods of the camp and turnover of permanent full-time employees.
The other area of interest that was touched on was the idea of a employer/employee matching retirement savings plan. These plans can be designed in a very flexible manner, that can be very accommodating to members of the plan with different wants and needs. Please respond with a yes or no if you have interest in learning some further details on a plan of this nature and what it means for both employee and employer sides.
In order for them to start going to a few of the insurance carriers that may be willing to look at a plan like this they will then need some employee data filled out. That will be the third step, again if enough interest. Once they have everyone’s information back they can get quotes together. Price is an area that is so very sensitive to demographics. An extra 5 people can really throw off the rates. However their educated guess for a cost estimate would be about $90-$120 for a single and $280 to $320 for a family. That will cover life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment, health and dental. He said he may be a little high on the family estimate. Some organizations will split this cost with their staff 50/50 or 75/25 or 100/0 or however your board wants.
This can be started at any time in the year, but for your own camps’ budgetary reasons, this is an ideal time to be looking at options for this year or in the near future.
Please let us know of your interests ASAP. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to be in touch with Kim kimscherger@manitobacamping.ca.
Looking forward to another possible great adventure with our MCA camps. |

New insurance requirements for commercial and public purpose ships that carry passengers
About a month ago new liability insurance requirements came into effect for passenger vessels operating in Canada. I am not sure what insurance provisions your camp operators currently carry but I thought I would send on an information notice that was sent out about the new requirements. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

After 10 years of tree planting with Canadian Camping Association campers, The ChariTree Foundation is growing its #outdoorlearning reach + helping to send kids to camps + schools with #environmentaleducation programs.
The ChariTREE Foundation just completed 10 TREE-mendous years of planting trees with Canadian Camping Association / Association des camps du Canada campers!
“Thanks to all CCA campers, staff and volunteers and of course the remarkable Catherine Ross, my mentor from Camp Mi-A-Kon-Da ~ who all worked together to plant thousands of trees across Canada over the last ten summers,” said Andrea Koehle Jones, Founder, The ChariTree Foundation.
She says she plans to take a break from this tree planting project to dig into a few new national and international kids climate action, food and water development projects by partnering with a new bigger charity she will help launch in 2019.
