Thames River Police Museum Visit

Dear Friends of the River Thames Boat Project,

Join us in Wapping on Wednesday April 3rd for our next RTBP Friends' event.

The visit starts at 11 am, where we will meet close to Wapping Rail Station and will conclude around 3 pm. The day will involve :

  • a private tour of the Thames River Police Museum in Wapping,
  • lunch (buy your own) at the Town of Ramsgate historic riverside pub, followed by
  • tea/coffee and cake with a tour of Hermitage Community Moorings, where RTBP now runs education days for schoolchildren in Tower Hamlets and surrounding boroughs, and
  • a short talk about how RTBP has partnered with the Hermitage River Projects to extend its education activities to East London, by the Chair of Trustees Keith Knox.

Situated within the HQ of the Metropolitan Police’s Marine Police Unit, the Museum offers a unique insight into the history of the world’s first police force and traces the story of the River Police from 1798 to the present day.  The Town of Ramsgate pub is sited close to Wapping Old Stairs and is famous for the capture of James II's notorious Hanging Judge in the 17th Century. Hermitage Community Moorings is a unique floating community run as a co-operative by the residents and comprising only historic working barges - which makes it a very special place for the activities of our outreach education.

A £25 donation is suggested for the visit, which will include a contribution to the River Police Museum as well as the River Thames Boat Project.
