March 11 City Council Meeting Preview

Here are a few items on the upcoming City Council meeting agenda:
  • The Salem Parks Foundation will present a donation for the McKay Park playground.
  • A vote to allow the City Manager to apply for and accept an Oregon Parks and Recreation Department Local Government grant to provide funding assistance for a new restroom facility at the north end of Riverfront Park. Staff report → 
  • Council will decided on a tree variance for proposed development of a 111-unit apartment complex on Wiltsey Road SE and Candy Flower Court SE following a public hearing on February 25. Staff report →
  • A Second Reading on annexation of property located at 4945 Delton Lane NE. Staff report → 
Can’t make it in person? Watch it live online. City Council meetings typically convene on the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month. Meetings start at 6 p.m. in Council Chambers, Room 240 in the Salem Civic Center.

Start the Habit: Bring Your Bag

Beginning April 1, 2019, large retailers in Salem, Oregon, will no longer provide plastic carryout bags at checkout. Shoppers will need to bring their own reusable bag or purchase a paper bag for five cents. Learn more →

Upcoming Annual Workshop for Landlords

​Attention rental property owners, property managers, onsite resident managers! Save April 17 and 18, 2019, for the next Salem Police Department Landlord Training. The workshop has a two-day format (8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day) designed to teach participants how to reduce crime in and around rental properties, as well as how to establish and maintain a stable rental environment. Building Permits are Going 100 Percent Digital April 1

Starting April 1, all building plans must be submitted electronically to the City. That means paper plans for new buildings, remodels, and other construction projects will no longer be accepted. Learn more→

Salem Economy Stable, Needs More Variety

Salem's economy is considered to be mostly stable. That is according to the results of the latest Our Salem survey question. Half of respondents chose that the economy is "very stable, but lacks variety in business and job opportunities." This sentiment was echoed in several respondent comments, which describe the large presence of government jobs and a lesser variety in private sector economic opportunities. Learn more→

Our Salem: Today

We're working on a multi-year project to update the Salem Area Comprehensive Plan, which guides development in the Salem area. The first phase, called Our Salem: Today, is analyzing the existing conditions of the City and evaluating how Salem could grow under current policies. Check the project website every two weeks for our latest polling question.

March Edgewater Walking Cruise

On this month's walk, visit five Edgewater Little Free Libraries all in a 1.5 mile loop. These are cabinet-sized libraries where anyone can take or leave a book any time. Feel free to bring books to share if you like. Meet at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 24, at Urban Grange Coffee, 1594 Edgewater Street NW. Back at Urban Grange, enjoy a free coffee and conversation. All are welcome.

STRIDE Run/Walk Series

Starting in the spring, you can sign up for a monthly run/walk event. Events begin at 9 a.m. on scheduled Saturdays.

  • 5k series is $5 per event
  • 10k series is $10 per event
  • Half Marathon is $13

Register online or visit the Parks and Recreation Services office, 555 Liberty Street SE, RM 325 in person. Registration will also be accepted on the day of the race from 8:15-8:45 a.m. Bibs are available on race day. Strollers and dogs (on a leash) are welcome. Learn more→
