UMCOR SUNDAY
(Formerly One Great Hour of Sharing)
Sunday, March 31, 2019

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is the not-for-profit humanitarian agency of The United Methodist Church. Since 1940 UMCOR’s mission — providing relief in disaster areas, aiding refugees and confronting the challenge of world hunger and poverty — has helped to heal the hurts of humanity in nearly 100 countries.

United Methodists assist UMCOR through gifts collected on UMCOR Sunday, which is observed on the fourth Sunday in Lent. This church wide Special Sunday calls United Methodists to share the goodness of life with those who hurt. Monies collected underwrite UMCOR’s “costs of doing business.” This helps UMCOR keep its promise that every gift to a specific UMCOR project will go toward that project, not for administrative costs.

You may support UMCOR during each Sunday in March by using the special offering envelopes found in the pews.

Pastor Denise is leading a study based on Lee Strobel's book, "The Case for Christ".  The Wednesday Bible Study meets every Wednesday from 11:30am - 1:00pm.  The Sanctuary is open prior to the study at 11:15am for optional prayer time. Everyone is welcome to attend and you can join the study at anytime.  More information can be found on the church website.

Anyone interested in participated in the DeBows music ministry, vocal or instrumental, can email Grayce at music@debowsumc.org.  The choir rehearses at 10:45 each Sunday morning.  The band practices on Friday nights at 6:00 PM.  The Easter Cantata has been planned and will be presented on Palm Sunday.  There is ample opportunity to participate via singing or reading.  If you are interested in participating in the Cantata, please contact Grayce for details.

Trustee News
The Trustees & Church Council have approved work to start on two major projects.  First, the two front doors leading from the outside porch into the sanctuary will be replaced.  Second, the parking lot will be expanded and totally repaved.  Work on both of these projects should begin in the near future.  Watch for more details concerning exact timing any impact it may have on accessing the church building.

"Open Doors" Fundraiser

We are circulating among our congregation jars labeled “Open Doors” on top.  We ask everyone who takes a jar to fill it with spare change they accumulate between now and Easter.  The jars will be collected after Easter.  This will help fund the replacement of the front doors of our church.  After more than two decades of settling, the current doors have become increasingly hard to close and lock properly.  While we philosophically want to keep our doors open to everyone, we must also make it physically easier to do so, while protecting church property.  If you have not already taken a jar, they are on the table outside of Fellowship Hall.  Please take one and keep it on your kitchen counter or someplace where everyone in the family can add to it.  "Thank You" for helping to make our church more accessible and secure.

DeBows is currently conducting an Old Monmouth Easter Candy fundraiser.  The last day to place an order is Sunday, March 24.   Order brochures are available on the sign-up table.  Contact Sue Hayward for more information.
Grocery Shopping Cards

Every week during Fellowship Time, you have the opportunity to purchase grocery store shopping cards for either Shoprite or Stop & Shop.  This is a convenient way to pay for the food you buy at the grocery store and at the same time support the ministries of DeBows UMC.  The church makes 5% of all shopping cards sold. You may see Sue Hayward or Karen Stillwell to purchase the shopping cards on any Sunday.

Orders Due by Sunday, April 7

On Monday, April 8, we will total all submitted Scrip Gift Card order forms and place the bulk order.  All gift card orders must be received by Sunday, April 7.  The order forms and information are on the table in the foyer outside of Fellowship Hall.  The church receives a percentage of the total sale (actual percentage depends on the specific gift cards ordered per the order form).  All order forms must be submitted with a check made out to "DeBows UMC".  Please give your completed forms and checks to Sue Hayward. Ordered gift cards will be received in time to use for Easter.
