There's mud in the water!
|
|
With all this moisture this winter, we're getting a lot of mud flowing into the watershed. Sunny days melt the snow, creating mud that drains into the water, and then unseasonal rains muddy the waters even more. We're thankful for all this wet wonder, but I think many agree we would be happy to skip the M-U-D.
Be on the look out next week for UWP's 2018 Annual Report. We'll be emailing that to you and hope you'll take a few moments to check out how our projects and activities are having a positive impact on our watershed. And be sure to scroll to the report's back page to read about our 2018 Partners of the Year: Tim and Heather Patterson. UWP is truly thankful for their support!
This week, our newsletter has a few timely, important announcements about ways you can get involved in UWP events. Plus, meet our new board member and check out the Snowshoe Tour photos.
Please read, respond & share,

NEWS FLASH: American Rivers named the 2018 Love Your Gorge as the "Tiny but Mighty" Cleanup Champion of the cleanups registered by that national organization last year! We appreciate the recognition of the mighty efforts of the 23 volunteers who answered the call from UWP and the Ouray Ice Park, and removed 6,000 pounds of debris from around the Uncompahgre River Gorge last September.

Introducing New Board Member Amanda Clements
In February, Amanda Clements joined the UWP board. A former Peace Corps volunteer in Kenya, wildlife researcher in Uganda and ecologist with the BLM, Amanda is working on creating a business to help people reconnect with Nature. Read more about her love for the outdoors and activities protecting rivers on her UWP Board Profile.
Also in February, the UWP Board elected board officers for the year. Dennis Murphy stepped up as Board President and Gary Roberts took on the role of Vice President, while Judi Chamberlin remained as Secretary and Scott Williams stayed as treasurer. Thank you to all our Board volunteers – UWP could not do the great work we do in the community without you!

Seeking Ridgway RiverFest Sponsors
The 12th annual Ridgway RiverFest will be on Saturday, June 29, 2019. UWP is excited to bring another family-friendly, lively community festival to you at Rollans Park in Ridgway. With no admission fee for festival goers, we bring you live music (Sugar & The Mint returns for a special performance this June), several entertaining river-based competitions (including the wacky and wild Junk of the Unc homemade craft race), and a variety of activities throughout festival grounds.
This event would not be possible without donations from sponsors, and we are now seeking sponsorships from $100 to $2,500. To find out more, please go to our RiverFest Sponsor Resources webpage, or email Tanya at ridgwayriverfest@gmail.com.

Early Bird Discounts for Conference Sponsors
The 8th annual San Juan Mining & Reclamation Conference is scheduled for Sept. 24-26, 2019, in Silverton, and will be combined with the Innovation Expo. While the conference, co-organized by UWP, focuses on presentations and panel discussions, the expo is more geared to hands-on demonstrations and networking. Both include exhibit tables and field tours. Under the theme "Changing Approaches", we will be soliciting presentation abstracts for it soon.
Currently, we are seeking sponsors and exhibitors to sign up to financially support the event and get many promotional benefits. The Early Bird Deadline to get a 10% discount on sponsorship packages is April 30. Learn more and download our Sponsorship sheet. For all conference/expo information, go to mountainstudies.org/expo. You can also contact Tiffany at tiffany@mountainstudies.org.
