Hello,
And so it begins - Lent, a season of reflection, contemplation and even sometimes of sacrifice. How we journey though the 40 days of Lent may be different for each of us. Maybe you choose to participate in the custom of giving up something for the duration. For generations this has, in a way, helped us go through the season with purpose and awareness. But maybe, as we settle deeper into our individual patterns and behaviours and time goes faster, we may account the giving up of something as being enough to put a check mark beside the “reflection” box in the lent season and go on about our daily lives without further consideration. It’s been quite a few years since I've sworn off chocolate or coffee for the period of Lent, not really because I don’t think it is a good idea, I sure know I could stand to give up chocolate for just a wee while. But I got to thinking, on its own, what positive impact does no sugary sweets for me have on the world around me? Without the crucial piece of intention connected with reflection, simply giving something up becomes more about the individual and less about the relationship we have with God and the impact of our actions in this most mysterious of Holy seasons. I believe if we pause, and take a breath, we would discover that God wants us to slow down, to listen and to learn. God wants us to be willing to seek what is hard to know, to be close and to be still and to listen and transform. This Lent season, together with Outreach we have brought you the opportunity to ask the questions, slow down, and learn. What ways am I being invited to spark change in the world? You are invited to consider the cross roads, where life and faith intersect by looking deeper at one of the most basic resources, water. Through daily reflection in our Lenten booklet (available for download below or in print form at Church every Sunday) you can learn water facts, reflect on the absolute force of this first creation and also, in just a small way, contribute to access to clean water for those around us that do not have the luxury of turning on a tap for a hot shower. With just a simple water bottle, which you can pick up form Church, you can make a difference. We will also bring weekly water wise moments in the worship services so you may hear first hand accounts of water experiences from people around us. So come with us on this journey through Lent. Let us each be like drops in the water of the vast ocean, together creating ripples that cross boundaries and obstacles bigger than we can imagine on our own.

Am I allowed to be involved?
In the Gospel according to Matthew it is written that Jesus blessed the meal and then shared with the disciple (Mt. 26:26-28). The laity are involved in the distribution because “these are the gifts of God for the people of God”. Age is not an impediment to serving. Young and old, families and individuals are welcome to be a part of the sacrament.

WOODCLIFF DEMENTIA CAREGIVERS SUPPORT GROUP
If you are a caregiver for someone suffering memory loss and need a safe, confidential circle to share your experiences and obtain information, DCSG is for you. We meet on the first and third Tuesdays of the month from 1:30 to 3:00 pm in the Edworthy Lounge. No registration is required. For more information, please contact the church office. EMBRACING THE SPIRIT
Rob Dalgleish, Executive Director of EDGE, says the growth of Embracing the Spirit, a Mission & Service program, demonstrates that there is an appetite across the church to experiment with new forms of worship and ministry. Embracing the Spirit is a Mission & Service program, learning network, and innovation fund.
As Dalgleish notes: “People sometimes ask me, ‘What do art shows or cooking classes have to do with church?’ I tell them it’s about loving your neighbour and the neighbourhood. Changing lives for the better, whether economically, socially, environmentally, or through more traditional spiritual practices, is an act of love. It’s an expression of the abundant life that was Jesus’ purpose. Through our own deepening discipleship, it becomes an opportunity to introduce people to who Jesus is and the way he invites us to walk.”
The Embracing the Spirit learning network consists of more than 300 people receiving guidance from more than 80 mentors. These mentors include retired professionals who are willing to lend their skills and expertise to help others. Another part of the program is the Social Innovation Challenge, where participants can develop a concept, discover new partners, and compete for start-up funding. There have been 11 Social Innovation Challengesso far, which bring a spiritual bottom line to entrepreneurship.

CORE CELEBRATION CONCERT
Sunday evening, March 10 at 7pm.
Our featured musicians and speaker this evening are Harmony through Harmony. HtH began in October 2009, to see what could happen when a love of making music was combined with a growing heart for hurting and oppressed people. They are motivated by Christ's mission to "Preach good news to the poor, ...proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed." (Luke 4:18). HtH invites its participants on a journey of discovery. Through music making and break-out discussions, they explore and express what each thinks, believes and values. They discuss current events, books, articles, the Bible, other media, and the lyrics of the music. In the process, thy discover how to become "voices for the voiceless" - to sing out and speak up on behalf of those who currently are silent or not heard. CORE Celebration is a citywide worship gathering featuring a rich musical program including choir, instrumentalists, singers, and many local musicians from the professional and church communities within our city.

Each week, we will also touch briefly on the story of one the holy women whose stories have enlivened people through the ages.
