PTO Spotlight

International Week March 11th - March 15th

This week is International Week at Thompson!  During the week, there will be various activities throughout the school day that celebrate the diversity of our community. Programs will include:
  • Morning announcements in different languages
  • Music from around the world during morning announcements
  • Diverse books on display in the library
  • World Art in the Art Room
  • International Spirit Day, Monday, March 11th: Dress up in the traditional outfit honoring another country, wear the color of a flag, or your favorite sports team
  • All-School Enrichment, Thursday, March 14th: Afro-Brazilian Capoeira Ensemble
For March, the theme of the Social Emotional Learning Initiative at Thompson compliments the International Festival and International Week. The monthly theme is Acceptance and the book of the month that the school will read is Stellaluna by Janell Cannon.
 

Travel Around the World in 1 Day at the Thompson International Festival!

Join us for an amazing world adventure on Saturday, March 16th from 11 am - 3 pm.  Best of all, no passports needed!

To participate go to the PTO website or use the links below:
  • Witness a one-of-a-kind Fashion Show presented by the Thompson kids. Sign up your child. The show starts at 11:30 am.
  • Travel to countries in South America, Africa, Asia, Europe and those closer to home. Visit over 20 countries and discover something new and interesting.  
  • Savor foods and treats from different cuisines at the International Cafe. Donate your favorite dessert to share.
  • Make African Masks, Mexican Flowers, Fire Breathing Dragons from China, and more in the Arts and Crafts room.
  • Win a continent-themed Raffle Basket. Contribute to making your child’s grade-sponsored Raffle Basket the most sought after!
  • Participate in a scavenger hunt.
  • Explore the diversity of the Thompson community at “The World of Thompson”.

Green Team News

The Thompson PTO has received a $2,000 grant to start an edible garden curriculum from Whole Kids Foundation! Thompson is looking for Garden Coordinators, Garden Educators and Garden Volunteers!  Please email Elizabeth at egrocco@gmail.com if you are interested.

Thompson has 6 raised garden beds, a plot for a pollinator garden, a storage shed with garden tools, a $2000 grant from the Whole Foods Whole Kids Foundation, additional PTO funding and volunteers to start a garden committee.  Please let me know ASAP if you are interested in co-leading or being part of the committee. Gardening expertise is not required for this rewarding opportunity.

The garden coordinator will organize the garden committee and lead garden committee meetings. The garden coordinator will delegate tasks to garden committee members to ensure that the committee:
  1. Defines the goals of the garden and fulfills the garden grant
  2. Identifies a garden educator who will partner with teachers to develop a gardening K-5 curriculum
  3. Coordinates with existing Thompson groups such as the Green Team, the After-School Program, Scouting Troops, and Arlington Eats to engage students
  4. Recruits and coordinates volunteers for open gardening time during recess for 8 weeks in the spring and fall; Recruits classroom educators and garden volunteers during summer vacation
  5. Develops a summer maintenance plan
  6. Expected time commitment: at least 2 hours / week.

PTO Meeting

Haven't been able to make an evening PTO meeting? Join us for a morning PTO meeting on March 22nd, after drop off at 8:15am.  Learn about upcoming spring events and an update from Ms. Donato. Little kids are welcome to join. Coffee will be provided.

The Drama Project Volunteer Opportunities!

We will need volunteers to help with the tech rehearsals on March 30-31 and with the performances on April 7-9. Please email thompsondramaproject1@gmail.com to let us know if you'll attend. Thanks for your support--we couldn't pull this off without many willing hands!!

Community Card Committee Seeks Chairperson Trainee for 2019-2020

The Community Card Committee is looking for a 3rd co-chair to shadow the existing team for a year, learn the ropes, and be ready to take over.  Join this talented team! No prior experience required. There are many ways you can lend your talents to the success of this profitable fundraiser. Arlington Trivia Bee, hosted by AEF

Sunday, March 17, 3-5pm at Arlington Town Hall (free!)

Join us at the Arlington Trivia Bee, hosted by the AEF. This town-wide, family-friendly event is an annual Arlington tradition that includes activities for kids and opportunities for audience participation. Cheer on 30+ competing three-person teams! Participants face off to answer questions about sports, literature, history, current events, music, science, and local lore. If interested in forming a team, visit https://www.aefma.org/events/trivia-bee/. Come cheer on Thompson's 5th grade team!

Arlington EATS Community Dinner


Join us for a Community Meal on Thursday March 14 at 6pm.

Party with us at Beats for EATS on Saturday March 23rd. There will be an silent auction, drinks, hors-d'oeuvres, and great good music. Tickets are on sale now. We have lots of volunteer slots: Friday 3/22, during the event and on your own schedule. If you can't make it, consider bidding from afar or making donation?  All of the money raised in this event will go to feed kids in food-insecure homes in our neighborhoods.
