Police Academy blog
Learn how a new Lakewood Police recruit reached his two goals of becoming a police officer as quickly as he could after graduating from college and moving to Colorado. It took working a full-time job at a law firm while still a student, but that “only reaffirmed my drive to get out of my sedentary job and serve and protect the community firsthand,” he said. Read his full story on the Police Department’s Academy Recruit Blogger.

Lodge licensing approved
A new licensing requirement will help ensure that guests and visitors to hotels and motels in the city will experience as safe an environment as possible. The City Council approved the new licensing program last week to address an inordinate number of calls for service concerning crime and disorder at lodging facilities throughout the city. Read more about the goals of the program at Lakewood.org.

History Happy Hour at Heritage Center
Join us in the Country Schoolhouse at the Lakewood Heritage Center for the next History Happy Hour titled "Not All Superheroes Wear Capes." Indulge your inner (or outer!) geek with tabletop games, a talk about comics with Kristina Maldonado BadHand and pick up some information about volunteering. The event is 6-8 p.m. March 12, and tickets are available at Lakewood.org/Luncheon.

City limits youth access to vaping, e-cigarettes

To protect the health of teens and prevent them from becoming dependent on nicotine, Lakewood has started a licensing program for stores that sell vaping, e-cigarettes and similar devices and is creating a public information campaign to educate stores and the public about the program. City Council approved the program under a new law that went into effect on March 2, and it prohibits all stores from selling these products to anyone under 18 years old. Learn more at Lakewood.org.

New city entrance signs
There are new "Welcome to Lakewood" signs at city entrances along major roadways that replace outdated versions of the signs. They incorporate Lakewood’s tree logo to create an identifiable image and sense of civic pride for the city. Installation at 12 locations began this year, and the signs are one component of an overall program to bolster Lakewood’s identity and improve people’s ability to find their way around the city. Additional signs will be installed to help guide people to civic and business districts within Lakewood.
