News from the Public Health Association's Wellington Branch

He Mihi,

E aku rangatira, tēnā tātou katoa!

What’s in a leader and what does leadership mean for you?

“May I stress the need for courageous intelligent, and dedicated leadership…Leaders with sound integrity. Leaders not in love with publicity, but in love with justice.  Leaders not in love with money, but in love with humanity. Leaders who can subject their particular egos to the greatness of the cause” Dr Martin Luther King Jr, 1956.

A big congratulations goes to Dr. Prudence Stone, the newly appointed CEO for the Public Health Association.  We look forward to seeing a new vision with strong leadership, intelligence, humility, integrity, energy, passion, strength and commitment to a kaupapa that requires progressive change.  As the Co-chair of the Wellington branch, we (the members) will continue to do our best to be ‘alert and vigilant’ and address significant Public Health issues in Wellington and across the country.  We will continue to strive towards positive change and improve outcomes for a better quality of life, and better health and wellbeing for everyone living in Aotearoa.  He waka eke noa! We are all together in this waka!  Let’s do it!

Now that Prudence has moved on as CEO and no longer Co-chair for Wellington branch, we have an acting Co-chair in the interim until the next AGM.  A big welcome to Ramil Adhikari.

Ministry of Health urges those travelling into New Zealand to ensure they have been vaccinated.
Measles is back in New Zealand and travellers coming into the country are urged to make sure they have been immunised against the disease.

Every case of the highly contagious virus originated from people travelling into the country from overseas since 2012, the Ministry of Health said.

Nevertheless, a fourth case of measles has been recently confirmed in Canterbury around the same time one case has been confirmed  in Auckland.

Have your say on the Draft Outer Green Belt Management Plan 2019.

The Outer Green Belt is a series of reserves along the ridges immediately west of the city and suburbs which is managed by Wellington City Council. It creates a belt of public open space, from the city's northern boundary to the south coast. These reserves help define the character of the city and provide places for nature to thrive and people to enjoy.

The Reserves Act requires that the Council has a management plan for these reserves. They are now reviewing that plan and have prepared a draft for public consultation.

PLANNING UNDERWAY FOR THE POST BUDGET BREAKFAST.

PHA Welly teams up every year with CPAG Welly, to host together the Post-Budget Breakfast. Two meetings have already been held with a skeletal committee of representatives of both branches.
 Already we have:
  • assured the Boatshed is booked for May 31st - save the date!
  • spoken with Finance Minister Grant robertson, who assures us our branch will always have someone delegated to present the budget from among his associate ministers
  • confirmed our National President, Lee Tuki, will be a keynote speaker
We will be needing volunteers on the morning of the event and hope to also find a regular planning committee member to represent us during these weeks before the big day. Please be in touch if you are interested.

Why NZ shouldn't be waiting to tackle methane.
A major new study shows the amount of methane in the atmosphere has been rising since 2007 – and it's not slowing down. While methane emissions dropped at the start of the century, new air sampling data shows they've been ramping up, particularly in recent years, and at rates not seen since the 1980s. This increase in methane was unexpected, they say, so it wasn't included in the climate change projections used in Paris Agreement targets.

Accurate measurements of farm emissions is probably of more concern to New Zealand climate scientists than it is to our farmers, Professor Martin Manning says.
