Chime In! Engages People in Music

The Ringers of Chime In! and the Singers of We Sing! are busy making music throughout the week and around the state. Read on to see what's up.

The Magic of Handbells

Eddie returned this year to join in the ringing at the 4-H Expressive Arts Day on March 23.

Eddie's dad said he'd been talking about it for weeks. After learning to ring at the workshop last year,
Eddie and his dad searched for information about handbells. When reading about how bells are made, Eddie pointed out to his dad how the clapper inside the bell works.

Amazing what magic 45 minutes with bells can create!
Altogether, 30 children and a few parents rang bells in the 3 workshops and performed in the afternoon concert.

A New Handbell Choir

A group of children from We Sing! have come together to form the third handbell choir of Chime In! They have dubbed themselves We Ring!

The new ringers performed at the We Sing! Concert in March and created so much excitement among the other singers that plans are underway to start a fourth handbell choir in September. Watch for details.

Creating Interest in Ringing

Chime In! reaches out to churches and organizations interested in starting their own handbell choirs.

In March, nine members of Chime In! provided music during worship at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Thomaston.  Members of the congregation learned to ring bells to accompany the singing of a benediction. This Easter, the church is borrowing bells from Chime In!
The church is looking forward to starting a handbell choir.  A contribution in memory of a beloved member of the congregation will make a set of bells possible.

Ringing & Singing

We Sing! singers always ring and sing during their concerts. Coordinating the voice and the hands is a great workout for the brain!

A Summer
Handbell Choir

Samantha Beschta, Assistant Director of Chime In!, directs a Handbell Choir of ringers from around Connecticut who perform at the Big E on CT Day.

Working with Other Handbell Choirs

Ringers from Chime In! joined members of the Ellington Congregational Church to assist them in preparing music for the up-coming Area 1 Handbell Festival in Hartford.

Singing for Singers

We Sing! recently presented a special concert at Pomperaug Woods, an assisted living community in Southbury where they met Hal Wylie and Faith Warner, both charter members of the Connecticut Choral Society. Hal encouraged the children to keep singing and to join them in the Pomperaug Woods Chorus in 75 years!

We Sing! Choir Day sponsored by Grant from
Woodbury-Bethlehem Community Music Foundation

A $1,200 grant from the Foundation made it possible for the 32 children of We Sing! to attend a production by the Waterbury Arts Magnet School of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory at the Palace Theater in Waterbury. The grant also enabled the children to enjoy a pizza dinner together, afterward, and then perform the concert at Pomperaug Woods.
Donations to WBCMF during Give Local on April 23 & 24 make many music opportunities possible for children in the Bethlehem and Woodbury area.

Ringing Just Because It's Fun

Ringers from Chime In! joined members of the Greater Danbury Irish Cultural Center for an evening of dinner and music.

At the end of the evening, everyone one rang and sang "Danny Boy".

The Bethlehem Grange & Handbells

In the New York Times Bestseller, Lilac Girls, which took place nearly seventy-five years ago, Caroline Ferriday sorts the day's mail and finds "an invitation to a handbell concert at the grange."
The handbells will be ringing again this month at the Bethlehem Grange as Director of Music, Rick Wood, is honored by the grange for volunteer work in Bethlehem.

So Much Music - So Little Time

I am always amazed by how much music there is in this world and by how much joy erupts when people make music.
I've always said "So much music, so little time." It was this thought that compelled me to retire early from teaching so I could find more time for music.
And it's happening!
Last year, we formed We Sing! and the children bring so much joy wherever they sing.
This year, We Ring! evolved naturally as an extension of We Sing! and the joy abounds.
Next year, another handbell choir is in the works, and I anticipate even more joy.

Your Support of Chime In! and We Sing! throughout the year and during the Give Local campaign makes these explosions of Joy possible.

Thank you.
Rick
