WST Learning Community Activities

The WST Learning Community offers an active, engaged experience for its residents and other interested students, with programs, activities, and events that include:

  • WST Learning Community Orientation: Held the first week of fall term.
  • Monthly dinners: Held in Stein House, featuring guest speakers, and open to all Georgia Tech students and WST mentors. Past speakers have included faculty, administrators, professionals, and alumni who share their career interests and paths. Other popular topics have included career strategies, resume writing, interviewing, and graduate/professional schools.
  • Occasional lunches: Held on campus at various locations and open (space permitting) to all Georgia Tech students. Some lunches are small (two to five students) with a faculty host while others are larger and focus on topics of broad interest (graduate fellowships, study abroad, etc.). Each term one or two lunches bring together students in a particular major; these may be co-sponsored by an academic unit.
  • WST Center events: Approximately two to three per term, open to all faculty, staff, and students. Regular events include an annual fall reception, WST-focused research panels, and the WST Distinguished Lecture.
  • WST Learning Community Mentors: Interested WST Learning Community students are paired with a female faculty/staff mentor in a closely related discipline.
  • Humanities elective course: Taught each semester by Professor Colatrella in Stein study lounge.
  • Coffee hour: Held in WST office in Stein before Professor Colatrella's class or by appointment.
  • WST GRA office hours: Each WST graduate partner holds a weekly office hour in the WST office in Stein.
  • Initiatives/events coordinated by WST Learning Community hall director/RAs: These include hall meetings and periodic "Treat Yourself Tuesdays," with social hour, arts and crafts, yoga, and more.
  • Support for research projects and conference attendance

LGBTQIA Interfaith Lunch and Learn

Friday, April 5 from noon - 1 p.m., Grace House

The LGBTQIA Resource Center is partnering with the Lutheran and Episcopalian ministries on campus to host the next LGBTQIA Interfaith Lunch and Learn.

An RSVP is required so that we can provide all attendees with free lunch.

Event description:

Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals." With the United Methodist Church's recent decision to uphold restrictions on same-sex marriage and LGBT clergy creating further divides among church leaders and members, conversations about inclusion in the church are more urgent than ever. We will hear from faith leaders whose courageous efforts have created positive change for LGBTQIA people across different Christian denominations. Our panelists will share their experiences of advocating for inclusion, dealing with the disappointment of setbacks, and engaging and leading others in pushing for transformation.

Please email Camilla Brewer (camilla.brewer@studentlife.gatech.edu) if you have dietary restrictions or need other accommodations.

Lavender Graduation
Thursday, April 11 at 6 p.m. in the Wardlaw Center's Gordy Room

Please join us in celebrating our LGBTQIA graduates and award winners at the 7th annual Lavender Graduation and 5th annual Lavender Awards! This memorable evening will begin at 6 p.m. with a reception followed by a special ceremony honoring the accomplishments of our LGBTQIA community at Georgia Tech. Please RSVP.

The mission of the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion is to provide programmatic and thought leadership, expertise, and advocacy to continue to promote the Institute's diverse student initiatives, programs, and efforts that facilitate our collective goal of student diversity and inclusion.
