State Senate Candidate Mike Brownrigg Calls on All Candidates in the Race for Senate District 13 to Sign Clean Campaign Pledge
Brownrigg’s pledge asks candidates to show their commitment to voters and the issues by running fair, truthful Primary campaigns.
Burlingame, California – Today, Mike Brownrigg, a two-time Mayor and current City Council Member from Burlingame urged State Senate District 13 candidates to sign a pledge to run fair and truthful campaigns in advance of the March 2020 Primary. Brownrigg’s “Call Them Out” pledge seeks to restore respect to the voters and the issues.
“I’ve personally asked and I urge my colleagues to sign this Clean Campaign Pledge. It’s time to put an end to negative, cheap-shot politics and misleading campaigns,” said Brownrigg. “I believe voters of San Mateo and Santa Clara counties expect more from us as candidates. This pledge holds each of us responsible for the conduct of our campaigns and allows us to run on our own merit.”
The pledge commits all candidates in the race for the Peninsula-based Senate seat to refrain from engaging in personal attacks or smears against opponents and to condemn these efforts by associated consultants, staff, surrogates, or supporters. It also calls for candidate differences on policies, platform, or positions to be identified in a way that is factually supported, not distorted, and done openly, not clandestinely or behind another candidate’s back or behind closed doors. Future candidates will also be asked to sign the pledge.
“We owe it to the voters of State Senate District 13 to allow them to make their political decisions based on facts and solutions,” said Brownrigg. “I urge my colleagues in this race — Josh Becker, Sally Lieber, Anne Oliva and Shelly Masur — to join me in this pledge.”
A companion petition hosted on Brownrigg’s website and social media channels urges voters in the district to stand beside him in the call for transparency and clean politics by asking them to sign in support.
Brownrigg’s campaign is armed with a growing list of endorsements from prominent local elected officials, including San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepa, South San Francisco City Council Members Mark Addiego and Rich Garbarino, Belmont City Council Member Doug Kim, Hillsborough Council Members Jay Benton and Marie Chuang, San Carlos Council Member and Mayor Mark Olbert, Burlingame Mayor Donna Colson and Vice Mayor Emily Beach, Burlingame Council Members Ann Keighran and Ricardo Ortiz, San Bruno Council Member Laura Davis, Half Moon Bay Mayor Deborah Penrose, former County Supervisor John Ward and former Foster City Mayor Charles Bronitsky, along with dozens of other leaders from every corner of the district.
Brownrigg is one of the top fundraisers in the race of five candidates. His campaign ended the financial reporting period with a total of $195,811 in contributions.
He is running a grassroots campaign, hosting house parties across the district, with a goal of hosting 100 house parties before the March 3 primary election.
Brownrigg is a 9-year Burlingame City Council Member and two-term Mayor, and served 8 years on the Planning Commission. Under his leadership, Burlingame expanded child and senior care, added more affordable housing and opened new parks and schools. Prior to elected office, Brownrigg worked as a congressional aide for Democratic U.S. Rep. Howard Berman and served President Clinton and two other administrations as a diplomat in the Foreign Service. Professionally, Brownrigg is a partner in a social impact investment firm that’s helping improve underserved communities around the world. He and his wife, Marty, a pediatrician, live in Burlingame where they are raising their four children.
Brownrigg was born and raised in the district, and his campaign seeks to address the affordability crisis affecting Bay Area families and work with Governor Newsom to increase all housing options, expand education and 4-year public institutions within district limits, develop a universal healthcare system, and continue California’s leadership on climate change and clean energy.
