President's Message

Sisters of the Cloth,
While I think unkind thoughts of lying groundhogs with pants on fire, I try to keep positive by cocooning in the sewing room, watching the birds swing merrily on the bird feeders while completing my UFO challenge, tin can block and finishing quilts.

While you are looking forward to spring, plan some treats for yourself. On Friday, Saturday, March 8, 9, the Kindred Hearts quilt guild is having their quilt show at General Sikorski Hall in Oshawa. Some of our members are also members in Kindred Hearts, so support them and enjoy a great show.

Also, I have booked the church 9 - 9, on Saturday March 30. For $25.00, enjoy a whole day SEW DAY away from distractions and to sew to your hearts content. Lunch, supper and snacks provided. If you have severe dietary restrictions and want to bring your own food, just pay $10.00 towards the cost of the rental of the room. The sign up sheet will be available at our March guild meeting, limit of 20 participants.

Just take it one stitch at a time.

- Sandy
Meeting treats for March
The treats this month will be provided by:
Sandy Austin, Dianne Brown, Lynn Stanton and Monica Wolfe
Thank you so much for your contributions!

Reminder: we still need some more sign-ups for providing treats in April and May.

Quilt Show 2020 Steering Committee Update

Our next committee meeting will be held at 7 pm Thursday, March 28 at Hope Church.  All members are welcome.

Thank you to Sandy Austin and Lynn Burnett who have volunteered to act as quilt registrars for the show. We are still in need of a volunteer to organize our Memory Lane booth - a tribute to guild members who have passed.  We are also looking for a volunteer to organize group visits to the show - contacting Seniors residences and other local organizations who might be interested in attending as a group.

If you are interested in either of these positions - or wish to join the committee in any capacity - please contact Monica at monica.e.wolfe@gmail.com

Port Perry Patchers UFO Challenge 2018-19

Fellow UFOers:

Your progress has been great so far. Good luck on your quilting journey! I look forward to registering your #2 item at the March meeting, and any of your other UFOs previously drawn and just completed, or not yet selected but finished ahead of time! The number of UFOers who have completed more than the one per month goal is astounding. We all, as a group, celebrate with you and your successes!

Cathy Vickers - A CQA Winner's Journey

March Program

Join us to hear from Cathy Vickers, whose quilts are known for their detail and sparkle.  A local quilter, who many of us know from shops in the area, Cathy will be sharing some special quilts, such as the CQA winner in the photo.

Cathy’s journey -  “I started quilting in about 2004-2005. I met Diane from Quilts n' Critters in Millbrook when I moved there from Florida. We were always referred to in Millbrook as the Florida people! After my first lesson I went to work for Diane and was there for about 3 years. I had to return to Florida for a bit, but moved back in 2010 after a hiatus from quilting and pretty quickly went to work for Mary at Tangled Threads in Peterborough for 3 years again! When she closed, I was lost! Then I met Cyndy at From the Heart in Bethany and have been there since the beginning and love my work and teaching.”

- Sylvia

What wonderful Northern lights blocks you made at our last meeting! They will be paired with some awesome sashing for a Hospice quilt.

Our next Outreach Sew Day is Thursday, March 28 at Hope Church. We continue to work on Hospice quilts. We work 10 - 4:30, take a supper break until 6, bring our lunches and go for Chinese food for supper. Everyone is welcome to join us for whatever period of time they can spare.

Free Motion Quilting with Rulers on a Domestic Machine - Notes from Carolyn Birnie

The ability to free motion quilt with rulers on a domestic machine is a relatively new development compared to sewing with rulers on a long arm machine. Many of the items required for sewing with rulers on a domestic machine are the same as the ones used with regular free motion quilting, items such as machine quilting gloves, Supreme Slider, appropriate needle and thread, a large flat work surface, air erasable or water erasable marking pen, etc.

However, instead of using a free motion foot, or stitch regulator, you must use a special ruler foot. Both Bernina and Janome have developed a ruler foot for their machines. Check with your dealer to see if one is available for your machine. If one is not available, Westalee Design by Sew Steady makes a ruler foot that can be used on most machines. Sew Have Fun in Oshawa sells this product. If you give Edith the make and model of your machine, she will be able to tell you which foot to buy.

For many of the designs you make using the ruler foot, you will also need to mark reference lines and points. A good tool to help you do this is the Cross Hair Square. Again, Westalee Design sells this product.
There are many rulers available to use with the ruler foot. The three rulers that I am demonstrating are ones made by Westalee Design, Creative Grid and Handi Quilter. If you are interested in Westalee Design rulers, make sure that the ones you purchase can be used with the foot that fits your machine. These rulers are sold at Sew Have Fun in Oshawa. Angela Walters has teamed up with Creative Grid to create many non-slip rulers.

Both the Westalee Design and Handi Quilter rulers require some kind of grip on their undersides to prevent them from moving while you are sewing. I use a product called Handi Grip by Handi Gadgets and I find that it keeps the rulers quite stable. The Creative Grid rulers are non-slip and therefore do not require Handi Grip on the underside.

Now that you are ready to begin sewing with rulers, just follow the steps below and see what you can create with the many options available to you.

  1. Lower the feed dogs.
  2. Lower the ruler foot. (Never put the needle down when the ruler foot is up)
  3. Bring the bobbin thread to the top.
  4. Take a few securing stitches.
  5. Put the needle in the “down” position and lower the needle.
  6. Begin sewing with the ruler in position.
  7. At the end, take a few securing stitches and put the needle in the “up” position.
  8. Raise the needle and then the ruler foot.

There are many excellent tutorials on the internet/you tube showing you how to use different rulers. I would suggest taking a few minutes to view and listen to them before you begin sewing. Like learning to free motion quilt, the more you practise the better you will become at sewing with rulers.
