An unprecedented public meeting will take place at the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre this Tuesday, March 5th at 7:00pm.
At this meeting, the public discussion about the future of the Community Forests, including all points of view, begins.
Ray Travers, a renowned Professional Forester says, “I have waited my whole career to witness large numbers of citizens acting like owners of our magnificent public forests.”
Speakers at the meeting will present on the ecological, economic and social values of the forests. This will include several “rockstars” of the forests, experts on community-run forests, sustainable forestry, carbon sequestration, Registered Professional Foresters, the Mayor, a Councillor representing the Forest Advisory Committee.
The meeting will begin and end with a member of Cowichan Tribes presenting with a member of Where Do We Stand, the public platform for dialogue about the forests. Together, transcending cultural differences, the combined presentation will propose a new way of understanding the forests that encompasses all people, of all cultures.
For one year, beginning now, there is a pause in logging of the Six Mountains to allow time for meaningful public participation.
There is no other municipal-owned forest like North Cowichan's on the continent. Many forest experts believe that this dialogue may lead to a forest plan that could be world renowned, making the Cowichan Valley an international leader in forest management.
