Leadercast Live Returns to Mason's SciTech Campus on May 10

This May, join fellow leaders for the world's largest one-day leadership event! Leadercast Live 2019 is a leadership conference broadcast live each year from Atlanta to hundreds of sites around the globe. Speakers include CBS This Morning anchor Gayle King and celebrity chef and author Marcus Samuelsson.

Exclusively for attendees at SciTech Campus, Mason's Brad Edwards, Athletic Director, and Darrell Green, Associate Athletic Director, will share their stories and insights of team leadership from their experiences on and off the field. Edwards and Green were teammates on the Super Bowl XXVI Champion Washington Redskins. Today, they lead a NCAA Division I program with 22 sports and more than 450 student-athletes.

Last year's event was sold out. Register today!

Johnson performed the complex calculations and flight path analysis of spacecraft that led to the United States achieving flight during the early years of the space program, including America’s first human space flight, early missions of Alan Shepard and John Glenn, and the Apollo 11 flight to the moon in 1969. Photo: NASA.

Bull Run Hall will be Renamed to Honor Katherine G. Johnson

Mason will rename Bull Run Hall, the largest building on the Science and Technology Campus, to honor Katherine G. Johnson, a trailblazing African American mathematician who champions civil rights and equal opportunities for women in STEM. Mason also will create a scholarship in her name.

Johnson is the 100-year-old NASA mathematician who overcame racism and sexism to emerge as an integral contributor to the early success of the U.S. space program. She is one of the three main characters portrayed in the 2017 Oscar-nominated film “Hidden Figures.”

Renaming the building is one of two major campus projects designed to better reflect and symbolize the university’s vision of inclusion. These projects were approved by the George Mason University Board of Visitors in late February. Mason President Ángel Cabrera said the two projects support the university’s mission as an innovative and inclusive academic community and enable Mason to “evolve in our symbols to be true to that vision of inclusion.”

Mason Doctoral Students Score High with NIH

Proposal Lands NIH Grant of Nearly $75,000

Three doctoral candidates pursuing PhDs in biosciences received extremely high scores for their NIH grant applications, and one received an NIH grant. The students wrote their proposals based on the work they are doing in the field of microbiology and infectious diseases, specifically with HIV and the Ebola virus.

College of Science professor Fatah Kashanchi, the principal investigator for the student research team, is located in Discovery Hall on Mason's SciTech Campus.
  • Michelle Pleet’s work examines Ebola virus proteins and the role they play in killing immune cells. The goal is to slow the spread of Ebola in an infected person.
  • Alex Barclay has identified a protein that is responsible for reactivating HIV in long-term patients. He is currently running additional experiments to find out what the protein specifically does in a cell and how it affects other proteins.
  • Catherine DeMarino is working to identify drugs that can inhibit the actions of antiretroviral drugs taken by HIV patients that, over time, help the virus in the brain. Her grant application for continued research was funded for nearly $75,000.
