Parshas Pekudei - Rishon with Rashi

Moshe Rabbeinu was in charge of making sure that the Mishkan was built. As part of this responsibility, he reviewed all of the donations and what they were used for, and made sure that each of the keilim were set up in their proper place.
Later on in the Midbar, this achrayus of setting up and taking down the Mishkan would be given over to the Leviim, with Isamar, Aharon’s youngest son, in charge.
Moshe reviewed the work that was done to make the parts of the Mishkan. These things were done by Betzalel and Oholiav. They had Ruach Hakodesh to do EXACTLY what Hashem wanted!
Moshe Rabbeinu calculated exactly how much of each type of material was given to the Mishkan. The Torah tells us how much gold, silver, and copper were given, and what the silver and copper were used for.
Moshe Rabbeinu also reviewed the different wools that were used to make the covers used to protect the Mishkan when it was traveling.

Today’s Tehillim is very special! We are finishing the LONGEST kapitel in the whole Tehillim, kapitel Kuf-Yud-Tes! This kapitel is so long that we don’t even say the whole thing in one day — it is split up between Yom Chof-Hey and Yom Chof-Vov!
One of the pesukim in today’s half is, “Sas Anochi Al Imrosecha Kemotzei Shalal Rav” — “I am so happy with Your words (the Torah), like someone who finds a huge treasure!”
The Rebbe’s father, R’ Levi Yitzchak, explains this posuk: He shows us that the first letters of the words “Kemotzei Shalal Rav” are “Kosher!”
What is the connection?
The Rebbe once said in a rally for kids that this teaches us an important lesson in fighting with our Yetzer Hara: A person might think that it shouldn’t matter if a teeny little candy or just a bite of food isn’t kosher. Really, if we don’t listen to our Yetzer Hara, and only eat kosher, it’s like a HUGE treasure! Even just a “small” thing that we win over the Yetzer Hara is a VERY big deal!

The Alter Rebbe taught us that the best way to do the mitzvah of Ahavas Yisroel is to remember that the neshama is the main thing.
When we look at the guf, we see all of the things that make us different, because every guf is different. But when we look at the neshama, we are looking at what unites us, because all neshamos are one!
In today’s Tanya, the Alter Rebbe shows us something from the Gemara that seems to be saying the opposite. The Gemara says that if you see someone doing an aveira, you need to hate him for it!
The Alter Rebbe explains that this is only in a certain case: It is only talking about someone you are friendly and comfortable with, he has to be frum like you, you have to have done the mitzvah of Hocheiach Tochiach with all of its halachos, AND he still has to continue doing the aveira. Then, you need to hate him.
We will see later that even for this person, the “hate” we are talking about doesn’t stop us from loving the neshama. It is only a hate for the not-good behavior.

Today’s Hayom Yom is similar to the “mission statement” the Rebbe said at the farbrengen where he said the first maamar, on Yud Shevat Tof-Shin-Yud-Alef:
There are three tools, Klei Shareis, that we need to use to go out and bring Yidden closer to Yiddishkeit. They are our love for Hashem, our love for the Torah, and our love for another Yid.
Someone who had the zechus to learn about Hashem and His Torah, and loves them, needs to also love another Yid and inspire him to also do mitzvos and learn Torah.
Deep down, every Yid wants to be connected to Hashem! So if we put in the effort, we have a promise that we will have hatzlacha.
The Rebbe taught us how to make our own love of Hashem and Torah stronger, and also how to share it with other Yidden with Ahavas Yisroel. Shlichus, Mivtzoyim, and the lessons in the Rebbe’s sichos help us to do our job properly and help every Yid come closer to Yiddishkeit!

Today we learn two mitzvos about firstborn animals (bechor):
1) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #144) The bechor has to be brought as a Korban, and the meat belongs to the Kohen. This mitzvah has two parts: Someone who is not a kohen can’t eat the bechor. The second part of the mitzvah is that if the bechor was brought as a korban, the kohen is not allowed to eat it outside of Yerushalayim. (This mitzvah is only kept when the bechor doesn’t have a mum, and it can be brought as a korban.)
We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Reeh: לֹא תוּכַל לֶאֱכֹל בִּשְׁעָרֶיךָ וְכוּ׳ וּבְכֹרֹת בְּקָרְךָ
2) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #108) We are not allowed to trade (be podeh) a bechor for another animal. The bechor itself needs to be brought as a korban. (We are allowed to sell it if it has a mum.)
We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Korach: אַךְ בְּכוֹר שׁוֹר אוֹ בְכוֹר כֶּשֶׂב אוֹ בְכוֹר עֵז לֹא תִפְדֶּה קֹדֶשׁ הֵם

In today’s Rambam, we learn about the mitzvah of bechor!
Perek Beis: We learn about a bechor that has a mum. One of the things we learn about is what kinds of mum make a Bechor not good for a korban. If the bechor has one of these kinds of mum, the kohen is allowed to eat it anywhere.
Perek Gimmel: Now we learn about how the bechor is checked for a mum that would make it not good for a korban. A kohen can’t decide for his OWN bechor! We also learn about using the wool that fell off of the bechor.
Perek Daled: The Rambam teaches us when an animal is patur from being a bechor, and when it’s a sofek — for example, if it belongs to a Yid and a goy, or if we are not sure it is a bechor.

In today’s Rambam, we start a new section — we start to learn about the Avodah of Yom Kippur! This perek teaches us how the Kohen Gadol gets ready for Yom Kippur.

In a few farbrengens, the Rebbe spoke about how every Chossid needs to make a minyan. For example, the Rebbe asked Chassidim to make a minyan in preparation for Yud-Tes Kislev, and then for Yud Shevat, in the first year of the Rebbe’s nesius. The Rebbe also asked us to make a minyan in one of the last farbrengens we heard from the Rebbe, in Tof-Shin-Nun-Beis.
What does it mean to make a minyan? Does that mean to go find a shul that has only 9 men and bring in another Yid?
That wasn’t what the Rebbe was talking about here! The Rebbe was talking about OUR minyan.
Every one of us can think of ten people we know well or are close to. They could be our friends, our neighbors, or even our brothers and sisters! They are our minyan.
Our job is to speak to the people in our minyan and help them grow. We can help them do something more in Machshava — to daven better, in Dibur — to grow in their Torah learning, or in Maaseh — to add in keeping mitzvos.
Then we should come to the Rebbe, close our eyes, and tell the Rebbe: Here is the minyan I made for you! Here are their names, and their mothers’ names! And here are the ways they are growing in Yiddishkeit!
The Rebbe says that when we grow ourselves, and help our minyan grow too, that is “Halicha Be’orchosav,” following in the Rebbe’s footsteps. The Rebbe said that this is important for every part of our neshama and for our hiskashrus to the Rebbe!

“Hayom Yom Rishon BaShabbos…”
The Hayom Yom for the first day of the week is Kapitel Chof-Daled, which starts with the words “LeDovid Mizmor.”
The reason why this kapitel was sung on Yom Rishon in the Beis Hamikdash is because in the first posuk, we say “LaHashem Ha’aretz Umloah” — “The whole world, and all that is in it, belong to Hashem.” On Yom Rishon, it was very clear that everything belongs to Hashem — there was no one and nothing else created yet! Even the malochim were not created until Yom Sheini.

It is a mitzvah that if someone sees another person doing an aveira or not following the way of the Torah, he needs to talk to him about what he is doing wrong. There are many halachos for this mitzvah, to make sure that it is done right and doesn’t hurt the other person.
One halacha is that the mitzvah of Hocheiach Tochiach is only to a friend, someone you are comfortable with, and someone who is frum like you. Any other person is likely to just get angry at you and want to take nekama.

The Shir Shel Yom of Yom Rishon was said with Ruach Hakodesh by Dovid Hamelech, about when the Beis Hamikdash would be built.
He says, “Se’u She’arim Rosheichem,” the gates should open up. These words are said in the kapitel two times! The Ibn Ezra says that the first time is talking about the first Beis Hamikdash, and the second time is talking about the third Beis Hamikdash, when the gates will be opened and it will never be destroyed!
