Check Out Our New Video!

On Valentine’s Day, Beagle Paws hosted our 16th Annual Dessert Buffet and Silent Auction at the Bella Vista. We would like to sincerely thank all those who donated and came out to this event, your support means the world to our organization. It was truly a fantastic night, with outstanding entertainment, a large silent auction, and a delicious spread of desserts made by our fabulous volunteers and donors!

During the event, we also revealed our new brand (thank you Go Rogue Penguin) and our newest video, in which the founding members of Beagle Paws (Sheila Lewis, Denise Aucoin and Lois O’Grady) share the story of the organization’s beginnings and how far we’ve come over the past 16 years. We encourage you to please watch and share!

A special thank you to Kellie Loder and Alan Doyle who graciously allowed us to use their music for the video and a big shout out to our talented volunteer Stephanie Tucker who created the video.
Thank You CanFel

We would like to acknowledge and thank the CanFel Foundation for their financial support for the Beagle Paws Pre-Care Adoption Program.  The objective of this program is to educate about animal welfare, aid in the control of overpopulation, and respond to and eliminate neglect of Beagles through educating the general public on how to properly care for their animals.

Thank you CanFel for supporting this program and helping create a better life for the Beagle breed.

Executive Volunteer Spotlight - Denise

This month’s Volunteer Spotlight is all about Denise Aucoin, who currently serves as one of our volunteer directors and was also one of the founding members of the organization in January of 2003. When Beagle Paws was formed, Denise had two beagles that her family had gotten as pups and a third that she found in poor condition (Teddy).

After adopting Teddy, Denise became obsessed with helping to create a better life for beagles in NL.

Over the past 20 years, Denise has been a proud dog mom to 11 lucky beagles! She has always had multiple dogs at a time, including many sick foster dogs that needed to be nursed back to health. She even permanently adopted several of her fosters over the years. According to Denise, “That’s what I love, taking home the down-and-outs, making them well, and giving them a better life.”

Denise has been a teacher throughout the entire time she’s been helping with Beagle Paws, and she has been involved in forming and promoting Animal Rights Clubs to school age children. Denise is a true animal lover, and her genuine concern for the well-being of beagles is heartwarming. She explained, “Before Beagle Paws I was not sleeping, obsessing on those little beagle faces I’d see peering out through wire, and unable to do anything. I had a plan drawn up for a beagle sanctuary, before Beagle Paws even existed. Helping form this organization has been the greatest accomplishment of my life.”

Paws for Thought

Car rides aren’t always fun for everyone and they certainly aren’t fun for anyone when you have a dog that is fearful of the car (or more likely the actual destination they think they are going to).

The first step is to recognize the signs that may indicate your dog does have a fear of car rides.  Some signs can include panting, excessive drooling, pacing, throwing up or diarrhea.  These signs can also be due to motion sickness and worth a discussion with your veterinarian.

Helping alleviate a dog's fears or anxieties takes time, patiences and a step by step approach.

Here are some great tips from Fear Free Happy Homes to help you get started with helping teach your dog to love the car.  As always, seek professional help from a certified trainer and/veterinarian if your dog is experiencing severe fears or anxieties.
