Appalachian Prison Book Project Launches Major Campaign

“I didn’t think I was missing out on anything by not going to college. I didn’t think college was for me.
Now I think it is.”
— Donte, incarcerated student in 2017 course

The Appalachian Prison Book Project is starting an exciting new project, and we want you to be the first to know!

We will be working with a prison in West Virginia to offer 15 students a college course starting in fall 2020. We are arranging for these students to get course credit through West Virginia University. To do that, we need to raise funds for tuition.

APBP has grown to a point where we have sent more than 30,000 books to people in prison. We started book clubs in area prisons. Then, in 2017, Professor Katy Ryan taught an English course inside a prison in West Virginia. At the end of the semester, one student wrote, “This class is a game-changer. It helps you build courage. You learn that everyone really does have purpose in life.”

Another wrote, “Justice and human progress never roll in on wheels of inevitability. We must work for it!”

These students continue to inspire us. And so were taking the next step to make college credit-bearing classes available to students in prison.
