March 2019

Hello and welcome to our next edition of our 2019 Monthly Leadership Tips: your 'once a month'  'bite-sized' chunks of practical leadership wisdom! Thanks for your feedback about the new look - and the new addition of our 'Leadership Bites'! We profile a new one in this edition.

This month's 'Leadership Bite', is about the 'Principles of Influence'. Once again we use the simple format of sharing one of our simple info-visuals, and provide a brief overview of the concept, why it is useful and how to apply it. Again, this 'bite' can be saved and printed off as a PDF. Feel free to use it in team meetings, coaching sessions or workshops! We then also share two blogs that we think you'll find of value.

This month we share :
  • Leadership Bites - the Principles of Influence
  • A recent video from Mike Robbins (Greater Good Science Centre) exploring why we need appreciation not just recognition at work
  • One of our Practical Leadership Actions - How do I ensure people feel supported, valued and safe?
Found something useful? Why not pay it forward and share a copy with your colleagues! Forward a copy of this email or send this link to join the DiA Monthly Leadership Tips list!

We also use the content we share each month, in the work we do in our consulting practice. Feel free to get in touch to find out more about anything in this newsletter or other blogs on our website.  Enjoy!

Recognition versus Appreciation

Earlier this month we came across a great talk by Mike Robbins. Mike explores the difference between recognition and appreciation. Whilst related concepts, recognition and appreciation are not exactly the same. But very importantly, human beings need both of them!

He says ‘recognition is positive feedback based on results or performance’ – it is about what you do.

Appreciation is more about ‘recognising people’s value; (its) about who we are‘.

We really recommend that you watch this video - it might be the most important 15 minutes you invest this month!

#1: How do I ensure people feel supported, valued and safe?

We have developed a series of practical leadership actions responsive to major themes that have emerged through our work with over 600 Discovery in Action® (Leading People) program participants.  We have observed six major themes that have consistently emerged as participants have grappled with the question: When do people perform at their best?  This is the first of those - the need for people to feel supported, valued and safe.

Generated through our exposure to on-the-ground leaders as well as various examples from blogs, articles and books, we have built a working set of ideas for each of these themes.

Click the 'read more' button to access this blog with a downloadable PDF practical tips guide with at least 30 potential actions to spark your thinking.
