Note from Dr. Cannon
March 4, 2019
Dear Breton Downs Families,
While we celebrate reading throughout the school year at Breton Downs, during March is Reading month we have some extra reading activities for our students. Twice a week students will participate in Drop Everything and Read time (DEAR). During these 15 minutes, students will stop their classroom activity, grab their independent reading book, and start reading! In the next couple of weeks, some of our classroom doors have been decorated like a book jacket from one of the March Book Madness books. Our students will be able to take the book tour through Breton Downs to see the doors.
Also, thank you to the Breton Downs PTO and East Grand Rapids Kent District Library for supporting the opportunity for our students to hear from a published author! This week our kindergarten- grade 3 students will hear a presentation from Mrs. Denise Brennan-Nelson, author of Tallulah- Mermaid of the Great Lakes, Willow & the Snow Day Dance and Little Michigan. And next week our 4th and 5th grade students will hear from Mr. Gary Schmidt, author of So Tall Within. East Grand Rapids Elementary students see themselves as writers. Each and everyday our students are immersed in the writing process. Our students write with purpose and intent. Our genres include: Personal Narrative, Informational, Persuasive/Opinion, and Poetry.
As an elementary teaching staff, we believe children should be reading and writing everyday. We also believe to become better readers, children need to write; to be better writers, children need to read. Hosting and learning from authors like Mrs. Brennan-Nelson and Mr. Schmidt is a opportunity for our elementary teachers to support our district’s belief system and to broaden their ability to engage and motivate their students to become better readers and writers.
