Network News

March 2019

The Discovery Network, a statewide program of the Museum of Discovery, was initiated in 2006 with funding from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. The Network's goal is to make hands-on, interactive STEM learning more accessible to the state’s school children and their families. The Network provides high-quality professional development, exhibits, and STEM kits for its members.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS
Too often the cost of tools and materials can be prohibiting for those wanting to enter the world of making. Because of its ubiquity and versatility, cardboard can be an excellent way into making.

During this workshop participants will delve into two core tinkering activities: mask making and the Survival Island build challenge. These activities are prime examples of how cardboard can be used in creative expression and problem solving. Participants will look at tools and techniques along the way that can help any maker hone their skills.

This workshop will be led by Ben Watson, Tinkering Studio Manager at the Museum of Discovery. Ben is an artist, maker and master cardboard tinkerer!

Tinkering with Solar Workshop RECAP
Last month we hosted a supercharged solar energy workshop with artist and educator, Asia Ward, where our members explored the power of photovoltaics with making.

Participants designed and built impressive solar rovers and solar fountains, seamlessly blending the art and science worlds together.

Members were also sent home with a kit of supplies to facilitate these activities at their own organizations.
Tinkering to a Healthier Brain Workshop
We hosted our first of two workshops under our 2019 Blue & You Foundation for a Healthier Arkansas grant last month. During the workshop, we dissected brains and eyeballs, used various devices to distort our senses and made brains in a bag!
Educators will be coming together again in April for a second workshop then incorporating activities into their own institutions.
STEM Excellence Pathway
The Carnegie STEM Excellence Pathway provides schools with a process and tools for assessing their current STEM programming, while also creating a practical plan for improvement. Participants attend three one-day workshops, one in the fall and two in the spring, and are able to share ideas with other participating schools.

Here's what one participant had to say about their experience:

“It helps you build a plan, it helps you evaluate the things that you have, evaluate resources you might not know about before. We've learned a lot from coming to hear from different schools of things that they are already doing and things that we can incorporate and change and make fit within our school."

-Kara Siemens, Arkansas School for the Deaf
The Network is currently enrolling schools for the 2019-2020 academic year. To learn more about this professional development opportunity for schools, check out our video or contact Ginsie Higgs at ghiggs@museumofdiscovery.org
The mission of the Museum of Discovery is to ignite and fuel a passion for science, technology, engineering, arts and math through dynamic, interactive experiences.
