How may we help you? - How to build your credit...
Today we are discussing how to build credit. Recently I listened to Darby Sweeney from People’s Bank talk about how to build credit.  Here are a few of my take-aways.
  1. If you have debt and are getting a tax refund, open a Certificate of Deposit and then borrow against the CD and make payments to pay off your debt.  That will build credit.
  2. If your credit score is not the best, you could have a difference of a 3% interest rate versus a 12% interest rate on a car loan.  That interest difference is $5000 increase in payments on a $20,000 car loan.
  3. Did you know that if your credit score is 639 you will pay $4250 higher in closing costs over a 760 credit score?
  4. To build credit get a major credit card like a Capital One card and open a Secure Credit Card by depositing $500.
  5. The highest credit number is 850 and is based on 35% payment history, 30% how much you owe, 15% length of credit history, 10% new credit, 10% type of credit- mortgage, auto, credit card – SO DON’T CLOSE AN OLD CREDIT CARD.
  6. Check  your credit report regularly AnnualCreditReport.com

Personally, I have an account with MyFico.com.  Anytime my credit is pulled or my credit score changes, I receive an email with the information and update. Thank you Darby Sweeney for your excellent credit presentation. For questions you can reach Darby at DSweeney@peoplesbankdirect.com
