Youth Industrial Strategy Competition – British Science Association outreach programme

The British Science Association is offering a free outreach programme to state-funded schools that have:

  • a high proportion (over 30%) of pupils eligible for the pupil premium or equivalent
  • a high proportion (over 30%) of pupils from ethnic minority backgrounds

to increase the number of students from these schools who enter the Youth Industrial Strategy Competition.

The Youth Industrial Strategy Competition is a new, national STEM initiative that aims to inspire and challenge young people aged 11 to 19 to come up with innovative solutions to the future challenges that face industry, society and the environment – for more information visit the Youth Industrial Strategy Competition website.

The Youth Industrial Strategy Competition is open for entries until November 2019 so, between June and October 2019, schools that meet the criteria are being offered two free event options:

  • a five-hour CREST Discovery Day based on one of the Grand Challenges, that are the focus of the Youth Industrial Strategy Competition, at which it will be explained to teachers and students how they can use the Discovery Day project or any other project they intend to do, or are already doing, to enter the Youth Industrial Strategy Competition – a minimum of 30 students must participate
  • 2-3 hours of teacher CPD in the delivery of a CREST Discovery Day and how to enter students’ projects for the Youth Industrial Strategy Competition, plus support for the teachers trained to deliver a five-hour Discovery Day using one of the Grand Challenge-themed CREST Discovery Day resources – a minimum of 150 students must participate.

For schools that participate in the outreach programme, the British Science Association also covers the cost of the CREST Discovery Award that each student who participates in a Discovery Day qualifies for, which usually cost £3 each.

If you are planning a STEM day for either the summer or autumn term, the events being offered through the outreach programme would support that perfectly, with the students gaining a nationally recognised award for their project work at no extra cost to the school.

If your school qualifies and is interested in one or both of the events on offer – each school can have one of each type of event as long as they are held on different dates and cover different classes or teachers/year groups – then email us to let us know as soon as possible, ideally by 10 May, so we can ensure that the resources are in place to support the event/events you want.

Green Plan It - encourages Year 8 and 9 students to discover the wonderful world of plants

This project, by the Royal Horticultural Society, is an opportunity for students to consider community needs and environmental issues. It takes place over ten weeks in the autumn term. Student teams will be paired with a volunteer horticultural mentor and challenged to research, plan and build a model of a garden that they would like to see in their school or community.

Students who participate could use the project to gain a bronze or silver CREST award.

Arctic Live – links students with scientists exploring the frozen north from 1-8 May 2019

AXA XL Arctic Live is a unique education event linking student with scientists exploring the frozen north from 1-8 May 2019. Students around the world will be able to the join the Arctic Live research team who are investigating marine plastics and ocean acidification. The science team from the University of Exeter and Plymouth Marine Laboratory will be based at the NERC Arctic Research Station in the northern-most permanent community in the world, Ny Alesund, on the Svalbard archipelago.

Schools can sign up for a range of live broadcasts at the website above, ranging from interviews with experts to live investigations and Arctic Q&A sessions. Each broadcast has a host of supporting resources from activities and lesson plans to galleries and virtual reality content.

Classes that book first via their website will be given priority with their submitted questions.

The Young People’s Book Prize aims to inspire young people to read about science and promotes the writing of excellent, accessible STEM books for under-14s. The prize is unique in that the winner is selected by judging panels made up of young people from across the country.

Applications for judging panels are now open. To find out more and get your school involved, visit their website.
I’m a Scientist and I’m an engineer – live online text-based chats been scientists or engineers and students

The I’m a Scientist and I’m an Engineer websites are online activities that allow students to put questions directly to scientists or engineers, using online, text-based, live chats. They can ask scientists or engineers anything they want, and the students get to vote for their favourite scientist or engineer who can win a prize for communicating their work to the public.
There is still two months left for schools to take part in this national campaign that encourages young people to share their scientific questions and investigations.

For more information, visit their website where you will find free downloadable resources and information about how to register to take part and other ways to join in the campaign.
The WISE Creative Problem Solving Challenge 2019

The 2019 Challenge asks 10 to 15-year-olds to imagine they are in charge of making Earth’s first contact with aliens. They are asked to say, in no more than 500 words, how they would tackle this problem. Who would they ask to help? How would they get the various STEM fields involved?

The Challenge is designed to spark the imaginations of young people, and the first prize includes a trip to the London Science Museum.

It is now open for entries. Details, terms and conditions, and entry instructions are available on their website.
