Woodmoor Elementary and PTSA are proud to present our
Diversity Awareness Fair
On April 3rd, 4th, and 5th, during school hours, students in grades 2-5 will have the opportunity to experience different challenges that their peers with disabilities may encounter. They will rotate through stations and engage in activities meant to replicate the following disabilities:
- Vision: Students will draw what is written on their paper, while blindfolded.
- Speech & Hearing: Students will communicate using only picture symbols. Working in pairs, students will communicate without sound by reading lips.
- Motor Planning: Students will complete daily tasks, such as opening a container, with one arm in a sling or behind their back. Students will negotiate a doorway while in a wheelchair.
- Empathy Game: Students will “walk a mile in someone else’s shoes” while discussing various scenarios and how they’d feel in these situations.
- Reading/Writing: Students will be given a mirror, paper, and pencil and asked to write their name by looking in the mirror only. This will simulate difficulty in writing and copying things from the board. Brain Scatter Game; Using color cards, students will try to read the color, NOT the word.
Kindergarten and 1st grade classes will participate in their classroom through read aloud books and class discussion.
Calling all volunteers!
We need your help to make this event a success.
Please consider signing up to help with this important event!
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the WM PTSA SPED Reps. Alaina Johnson, Sarah Austin or Aileen Dingess
