THE WORD

(BRIEF BITS OF INBOX INSPIRATION BROUGHT TO YOU BY)

Strands is brought to you by guest curator Ari Levine.

Howdy! Excited to be here. I’ve been stealing Rosie and Faris’ ideas for years, so happy to be contributing to their world. I met Rosie and Faris around the same time back around 2009 when I was at StumbleUpon and they were at their respective agencies. Rosie over a call for one of her clients and Faris over drinks somewhere on Grand Street chatting through serendipity and the joy of discovering new things on the internet.

I’ve been following along on their adventures and retweeting them ever since.

These days when I’m not building with Magnet Tiles or making videos on Linkedin, I’m working to grow Nudge, a platform for Branded Content measurement and intelligence.

"Everything is public now, potentially: one’s thoughts, one’s photos, one’s movements, one’s purchases. There is no privacy and apparently little desire for it in a world devoted to non-stop use of social media. Every minute, every second, has to be spent with one’s device clutched in one’s hand. Those trapped in this virtual world are never alone, never able to concentrate and appreciate in their own way, silently. They have given up, to a great extent, the amenities and achievements of civilization: solitude and leisure, the sanction to be oneself, truly absorbed, whether in contemplating a work of art, a scientific theory, a sunset, or the face of one’s beloved." -- Oliver Sacks, for the New Yorker

The Soothing Promise of Our Own Artisanal Internet

#internet #community #discovery #freedom
My love of the internet and my pursuit of a career in the sphere stemmed from the sense of wonder, learning, and exploration of interest based communities. Beyond the obvious anti-big tech arguments and the “oh shit, what have we done” from many social internet pioneers in the post-2016 awakening, many yearn for the open web and the simple pleasures the early web brought with it. There’s been a lot of chat around this article and these ideas recently. Some would say it’s just nostalgia and the “kids” don’t care, I think it’s more about the fact that the kids don’t know what the web can be. ::WIRED::

When Kids Realize Their Whole Life Is Already Online

#internet #parenting #privacy #choices
Speaking of kids… I’m not just an internet professional, I’m a parent too. I’m fresh back from a family vacation with lots of pictures shared so this hits home.  I lost the battle in my family about not sharing photos online, but I’ve been known to call family members and ask them to take down pictures or comments that I see as excessive or inappropriate.
Part of the problem is that most parents/grandparents/aunts/uncles don't understand the "social" internet and the way information and data is harvested today and will be used in the future.  I think a lot about:
My children wanting to control their own images and what information about them is out "there" for personal or professional reasons.
Advertisers already gathering information on them and their habits, interests, travels.
Safety and security. ::THE ATLANTIC::

The Machine Stops

#internet #themachine #smartphones #culture #history
Newly published by famed neurologist and author Dr. Oliver Sacks this piece looks beyond my short term issues of content discovery and privacy concerns for children and into the much broader issues surrounding a lack of connection to history, science, each other, and ourselves (For a bonus read about interoception).  You’ve heard much of these concerns before, and most likely share them, but Sacks articulates them thoughtfully, poetically, and ultimately with positivity that we can all use. ::THE NEW YORKER::

Love. Because what else are we here for?

Thanks for reading. Feel free to say hi on Twitter or LinkedIn
