Vehicular Cyclists:
Where they are right, where they are wrong

In this Kostelic Planning article, Don Kostelec examines the influence of vehicular cyclists on bicycling infrastructure at the expense of separate bicycle facilities and riders of different abilities. Kostelec speaks to the vehicular cycling philosophy and approach to cycling. He finds it favorable in many respects, but also dogmatic in others. Read the full article to learn more.

Stay safe while biking to school

You know what March means? More daylight, more warm temperatures and more opportunities to bike/walk to school. If you plan to bike, walk or scoot to school with your kiddos, here are some suggestions for a safe and successful journey:
  • Pre-map your route and ride on a non-school day to practice.
  • Always let your child ride in FRONT of you.
  • Buy a good lock and ensure that your child properly locks their bike.
  • Backpacks can be heavy, awkward or sweat promoting; consider a bicycle rack or basket.
  • Too far to bike from home? Consider parking at a local park and taking scooters, bikes or walking the rest of the way.
  • Bring an incentive for the way home, which can be more tiring; a planned picnic or even special snack/energy bar can help a lot about half to three-quarters of the way home.
  • Be realistic with your goals. Two or three days a week is a great start – work your way up to more.
  • Make it fun/social – learn to identify flowers, birds or count the number of houses. Encourage friends and neighbors to join in.
  • Enjoy the fresh air and quality time with your child in the morning. It passes quickly.
