February 25, 2019 -- In testimony at a City Council Hearing on Gender and Cultural Diversity in NYC Monuments, Board Members Pam Elam, Brenda Berkman, and Judaline Cassidy from the Stanton and Anthony Statue Fund and its Monumental Women Campaign outlined their five years of work to break the bronze ceiling in Central Park to create the first statue of real women in the Park's 165-year history.

Monumental Women conversation on "Lessons Learned from the Woman Suffrage Movement in the Continuing Fight For Women's Equality"

Noted author and journalist Lynn Sherr will moderate this conversation between a Woman Suffrage historian (Professor Marjorie Spruill) and a feminist activist (Judaline Cassidy) on what the present-day women's movement can learn from the battle for the vote as women continue the long journey toward full equality.

When the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1920, suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt described the 72-year struggle as an unbroken chain of activism: “Young suffragists who helped forge the last links of that chain were not born when it began. Old suffragists who forged the first links were dead when it ended.”
A century later, the continued debt of the young to the old is worth revisiting.
What can Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth and so many others teach today’s activists? How might the road to full equality benefit from understanding the campaigns, setbacks, mistakes and tactics of our foremothers?

 Marjorie J. Spruill is Distinguished Professor Emerita from the University of South Carolina, whose work focuses on women and politics from the woman suffrage movement to the present as well as the American South.
Most recently Spruill is the author of Divided We Stand: The Battle Over Women’s Rights and Family Values That Polarized American Politics (Bloomsbury 2017, paper 2018). Divided We Stand addresses the rise of the modern women's rights movement to a peak period of success, the mobilization of social conservatives in opposition, and the impact on American political culture.
Spruill is also the author of New Women of the New South: The Woman Suffrage Movement in the Southern States (Oxford University Press). She has edited five books on woman suffrage, including One Woman, One Vote: Rediscovering the Woman Suffrage Movement, the companion volume to the PBS documentary “One Woman, One Vote.” A new Centennial Edition is planned for 2020. Spruill is serving as an advisor to the National Archives for its exhibit, “Rightfully Hers,” celebrating the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment. She also co-edited a two-volume textbook on the history of the American South and two multi-volume anthologies about the “lives and times” of women in South Carolina and Mississippi.

 Judaline Cassidy was born on the twin islands of Trinidad and Tobago and started her career as one of the first three women selected to learn plumbing at the John Donaldson Technical Institute of Trinidad. After immigrating to the US, she worked as a nanny and housekeeper until she was accepted into the New York City plumbers union’s five-year apprenticeship program. Judaline has been a proud member of Plumbers Local No. 1 New York City, for the past twenty years. She was one of the very first women accepted into Plumbers Local 371 Staten Island, NY, and the first woman elected to the Examining Board of Plumbers Local No. 1. She ushered in the first Women’s Committee within her Union and became the Committee’s first President. She serves on the Advisory Board for the Women’s Building NYC. Judaline is also a Board Member of the Stanton and Anthony Statue Fund.
In June 2017, Judaline established the non-profit Tools & Tiaras Inc. The primary goals of this organization are to expose, inspire and mentor young girls and women about trades that are “non-traditional” for women
such as construction, firefighting, stagehands, etc.

 Award-winning broadcaster and author Lynn Sherr spent more than thirty years with ABC News, covering a wide range of stories – from women’s issues and social change to investigative reports, politics and the space program – at “20/20” and World News. Her writing has appeared in numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Parade. She continues to broadcast on a variety of platforms, to write for magazines and online, and to lecture across the country.
Her biography, Sally Ride: America’s First Woman in Space, was published in 2014. Among its other honors, the book was a New York Times bestseller, and was a Best Book of the Year for the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times.
Widely acknowledged as an expert on the life of Susan B. Anthony and the suffrage movement, Sherr is also the author of a number of other bestselling books, including SWIM: Why We Love the Water; Outside the Box: My Unscripted Life of Love, Loss and Television News; Failure Is Impossible: Susan B. Anthony in Her Own Words; Tall Blondes: A Book About Giraffes, which was also the subject of a one-hour documentary for the PBS Nature program; and Susan B. Anthony Slept Here: A Guide To American Women's Landmarks (with co-author Jurate Kazickas). |

Help Monumental Women make Wikipedia more inclusive of women contributors and women’s biographies by joining our first ever Wikipedia Women’s History Month Edit-a-thon on March 6 and March 7, 2019 from 4-8 PM.
Wikipedia is the fourth most visited site online and the one most likely to appear first when you Google anyone’s name. Yet less than 17% of the biographies online are of women and less than 10% of Wikipedia contributors are women!
We are partnering with Fordham University’s Lincoln Center campus at 113 West 60th Street, Manhattan (Lowenstein Hall), and this event is free and open to the public. No Wikipedia or computer expertise is needed – there will be experts from Wikimedia to help us.
