A seismic shift is coming to college athletics next year as Big Ten Commish Delany will conclude his leadership of the league. Northwestern Prez Schapiro will lead the search for Delany's successor, "Jim has had an extraordinary impact on the Big Ten Conference, its member institutions, administrators, students and coaches since 1989. He has been a forward-thinking, collaborative and decisive leader in every aspect of conference proceedings. We thank him for his dedicated service to date and look forward to working with him through the conclusion of his contract." End of June 2020 is the official end date. Korn Ferry will assist with the search. (link)
+ The Athletic's Auerbach, who previously reported Delany wouldn't work past his current contract, gets a Q&A with the Commish. Delany: "I’ll be 72. My health is great, my energy is good. I think I’ve had plenty of opportunities to contribute, and it’s a good time to pass the baton to a new leader. […] I don’t really think about it as retirement, per se. I’m leaving the job here in 2020, but I think I’ll be pretty active. I expect I’ll probably do some teaching, speaking, consulting — I’m not sure exactly how it’ll all fit together." On the media front, Delany says he won't predict where the landscape is headed, "because I really don't know." More. (link)
+ Delany to ESPN's Rittenberg, "I've had a fabulous team here at the conference office, and have had very talented people in our campuses. My knack has been to see around the corner a little bit, but also empower people around me and try to bring people together. [...]  I would have loved to have won more, but that's kind of fool's gold, whining about what you do or don't do." (link)
+ Delany to the Chicago Tribune's Greenstein on his own legacy, "It is not mine to call; that’s for other people. I got a chance to do something I love, to be involved in competition and education and to do it for three decades. I couldn’t have asked for anything more. The last 10 years were different in terms of shortened news cycles. It’s very exciting and stresses you out, but we’ve steadied the boat and developed wonderful collaborations between universities." (link)
+ USA Today's Wolken sees Delany's exit as one of generational change that could lead to changes for the College Football Playoff (read: expansion, which Delany says needs to be discussed). Wolken: "In a sense, Delany is getting out at the right time. The last 30 years have seen incredible growth in college sports that made everyone rich without the power structure getting upset too much. The next 30 will almost certainly come with more headaches. Delany will go down as one of the greatest, most innovative administrators of all-time in college sports and many in college football will miss him. But if you’re rooting for an eight-team playoff, there’s no doubt his retirement opens that door a bit wider." (link)
+ Yahoo's Wetzel frames, "Talk to 40-something and even 50-something college administrators, mostly athletic directors or associate commissioners who eventually take over the sport, and you’ll hear a far different worldview than the 71-year-old Delany and his peers. Soon enough discussions in college athletics will start tilting to what can be done, not what can’t be done. That isn’t to say Delany was afraid of change. He impacted and revolutionized college athletics in massive ways via the creation of the Big Ten Network to the blind expansion of league membership to increase the value of that cable channel. That is what made him so infuriating to fans. He was inconsistent, a situational traditionalist." (link)
+ Northwestern AD Phillips is the name that comes up most often for the post, though others mentioned by national media yesterday include Big Ten Network Prez Silverman, Big Ten Deputy Commish Dietz & Big Ten Assoc. Commish Rudner. Wolken notes, "it’s a bit hard to predict since the presidents are the ones who will make the call." (link, link, link)
Incoming Wake Forest AD Currie introduced in Winston Salem. Currie: "Being the athletics director at Wake Forest is our dream come true. It's the biggest challenge of my career." Longtime Deacs boss Wellman says he'll make any decisions needed on the MBB front before leaving office. Currie on that topic, "Ron Wellman has made a career of incredible decisions for Wake Forest. I have extraordinary trust and respect for Ron and President (Nathan) Hatch, and as we go along the road, I'm sure that I'll be clued in when I need to be." (link - scroll down for video of presser, link - post-presser interview); Currie with more thoughts on his time at Tennessee, "Going through what we did at Tennessee, obviously we got a lot of stuff done out of the staff we hired, who continue to do a good job. We went from one women to five women on the executive staff. We hired the first African American female assistant athletic director in UT history. We hired a great baseball coach and tennis coach. (Tony) Vitello’s got them undefeated right now, and the best start in school history." (link)
Former NCAA Managing Director & Indiana State AD Prettyman gets his time on the Idaho State campus to pitch key constituencies on why he's the right leader for the Bengals. Prettyman: "I was happy at Indiana State and then had the opportunity to go on and do some cool stuff at the NCAA. And now I'm ready to get back to a campus. […] I went (to Indiana State) and some things needed to be different than they were, and we got that done and we experienced a high level of success. We not only grew in the classroom and in the community, but we grew on the scoreboard. We won more games. Athletics is the proverbial front door, probably the most visible thing on this campus to the outside community. […] Culture change doesn't happen overnight. We'll be delving into some unknowns, but if everyone buys in, we'll see great changes in our campus community." (link)
The Mountain West says drama the post-game handshake line, not fans rushing the court, led to the post-game tension between Nevada & Utah State on Saturday night. No suspension handed down from the league as both schools are responsible for their own discipline. Aggies AD Hartwell uses "unacceptable" to describe the actions of some USU staff members, but doesn't want to "overshadow what was a great college basketball game between two NCAA Tournament-caliber teams." Wolf Pack HC Musselman vouches for the character, standards & integrity of student-athlete Caroline, who was incensed in the tunnel after the game. Doesn't sound like a suspension is coming. (link)
Athlete Viewpoint & RealRecruit get profile treatment from the Wall Street Journal's Bachman under the title, "The Companies That Collect College Sports Secrets." Interesting pic included of Athlete Viewpoint's dashboard from a head coach evaluation, RealRecruit "in about 70" departments these days, including integration at Baylor & Maryland. Athlete Viewpoint co-Founder Cross on one situation where student-athlete feedback uncovering Adderall being shared around a team, "The athletic department saw that data, immediately contacted campus counseling, did a program for that team." RealRecruit Founder Chadwick: "We want to help an institution uncover a massive issue and address it correctly." (link)
Now that the NCAA has temporarily lifted its ban on holding championship events in states where single-game betting is allowed, Las Vegas is reportedly preparing its bid to host NCAA Tournament games. Applied Analysis Principal Aguero, who is also one of the leaders of the Las Vegas Stadium project explains: “We’ve had a lot of success with conference championships here in Las Vegas. … We have 147,000 hotel rooms and the second-busiest destination origination airport in the country. This community was designed to host these types of events.” UNLV is primed to take the lead in the basketball bidding process, and Rebels AD Reed-Francois notes that “specific to men’s basketball, working alongside local and regional leaders, we intend to be aggressive in submitting attractive and competitive bids to host a preliminary round or regional site.” Aguero adds: “If it’s a sports activity, Las Vegas is going to come after it." MBB tourney sites are up for grabs as early as 2023. (link)

Professors from Temple, New Mexico, Tennessee & UNC Pembroke (DII) studied the career paths & professional balancing mechanisms employed by eight females who lead DI conferences around the nation. Notable findings: "Participants expressed challenges attempting to achieve balance between their work and personal life, and went as far as saying, 'I hate the word balance; I think it’s more about work/life integration.' […] There may be structural components in place within intercollegiate athletics that may limit the professional mobility of anyone who is not able to dedicate all their time to work early in their career. […] The women in this study echoed the importance of mentorship, but they believed that mentor–mentee relationships created through organic relationships were more beneficial than those created through formal programs." Former Texas AD Perrin lands at law firm Winstead Hooks, will serve as Of Counsel in the Houston office. Perrin will "work in the Healthcare, Sports, Litigation & University practice and industry groups." He comments: "I am thrilled to be associated with a firm that has such history in Texas as well as a sterling reputation. I look forward to working with my new partners, adding value and strengthening current client relationships in addition to developing new ones." (link)
1.Question's Brown chats with NFL SVP of Football Strategy & Business Development Leech, who previously served as Managing Director of Championship & Alliances for the NCAA, on coordination between the two entities, data, tech, safety & more. Leech: "It's a delicate balance because neither organization, NCAA or NFL, wants to feel like they are trying to drive change to the other organization. Each entity is its own and makes their own decisions based on the unique nature of their game. […] Informally there is a lot of communication between people in college and pro football throughout the year. Formally, we meet annually with the NCAA to talk about what each group has seen over the prior season and what is on the table to be changed the upcoming season. […] In the future, the game of football will increasingly become more data driven....on and off the field." More in this nearly 15-minute convo. (link)
CNN Prez Zucker, who will now oversee Turner's sports rights holdings, "WarnerMedia will continue to be aggressive when appropriate and strategic. […] We are not going to take anything off the table. […] I’m very comfortable with Turner Sports as it is today, (but) we will always be open to trying new things and not be beholden to legacy ways of doing things. My philosophy has been always to respect what has come before but not be bound by it." (link)
The Athletic’s Davis examines the (mis)behavior of several HCs around MBB last week, including Iowa HC McCaffery, whose vitriol toward an official resulted in a two-game suspension. Davis also cites technicals received by Ole Miss HC Davis and East Carolina HC Dooley as symptoms of a larger issue. Acknowledging there is immense pressure to win in MBB, Davis writes: “This is sports, not church, and tempers are going to flare. But as the primary stewards of the game, it is up to these men -- these grown-ups -- to conduct themselves in a mature fashion. … Hopefully, the conferences and the NCAA will continue to clamp down on this bad behavior until coaches get the message and change their ways. Because March Madness is looming, and right now this sport is not ready for its close-up.” (link)
More Personnel: WinAD adds attorney Kelly to the team to lead a new service offering, called Win AD+, which will provide consulting on employment and vendor contract negotiations to athletic departments. Full announcement expected soon. SAAS goes (more) human. (link); Utah FB HC Whittingham gets a two-year extension that will take him through the 2023 season. (link); North Carolina Swimming & Diving HC DeSelm will resign at the end of the season, citing a cancer-related mass that will require surgery later this month. (link); Colgate Swimming & Diving HC Waeger also steps aside. (link); USA Today's Berkowitz with MBB HC bonus info: Kansas State clinched a top-three seed in the Big 12 Tourney, giving HC Weber a $200K bonus. (link); Florida State FB HC Taggart will have nine on-field assistants this season instead of 10 as the NCAA has denied FSU's appeal to move AHC Kelly to an off-the-field role because the NCAA classifies Kelly as an "individual associated with a prospect." (link)
The NCAA released the updated Top-16 seeds for the impending WBB Tourney with Baylor (Greensboro), Louisville (Chicago), Notre Dame (Portland) & UConn (Albany) on the 1 line. Iowa, Stanford, Oregon, Mississippi State as 2s (same regional order). Nevada Senior Assoc. AD/SWA & Committee Chair Bennett: "Since our first reveal on February 11 there has been significant movement on all of the seed lines. We look forward to conference tournament play over the next two weeks that will go a long way to determining which teams are in contention for not only top-seed consideration but at-large bids as well." (link)
Legal: U.S. District Court Judge Gergel yesterday moved to reopen the wrongful termination suit filed by former College of Charleston baseball HC Health against the university, ruling that the "landscape has changed" in light of recently discovered test messages. Gergel also ordered Cougars AD Roberts and current HC Holbrook to hand over electronic devices and emails for a forensic report. The parties had originally reached a $166K settlement of the suit, but attorneys for Health filed a motion to reopen the case after discovering text messages that appear to contradict Roberts’ assertion that Health was let go for "just cause" due to a "toxic environment" beset by verbal abuse. (link); Guess we'll learn more about this today, but here's the preview from Law360, "One of three men convicted of bribing student basketball players to attend Adidas-sponsored schools urged a New York federal judge Monday to deny two of the schools’ restitution bids, saying they..." (link); Another of interest from Law360, "The National Collegiate Athletic Association won't have to face wrongful-death claims from the parents of a college football player, a New Jersey judge ruled Friday, saying the claims don't hold up..." (link)
Arizona State has reported a $13.1M deficit for FY18 despite setting a revenue record. The operating loss is attributable in large part to the $12.8M buyout of former FB HC Graham, the totality of which counts against ASU’s books for the fiscal year despite its being paid out in installments through June 2021. The deficit is ASU’s first since 2012. Arizona is also reporting a $7.4M deficit for FY18 due in large part to $8.2M in severance payments on the books, including a $6.2M buyout for former FB HC Rodriguez. Revenue at ASU increased 11.9% to $113.6M in FY18, buoyed by upticks in media rights income ($22.4M), ticket revenue ($12.4M) and contributions ($24.2M). Meanwhile, UA’s total revenue increased 5.3% to $95.8M in FY18 despite an 11% slip in ticket sales to $13.7M. That dip was offset by a 28.1% increase in donations to $23.2M and media rights increase to $27.1M. (link)
Oregon State announced it has ended its Women's Swimming program, citing the cost of a facilities as a leading factor in the decision. Beavers AD Barnes: "Investing in competitive swimming program facilities would negatively impact the ability to serve facility requirements for all sports and all OSU student athletes." Renovating the Osborn Aquatics Center would cost $20M plus maintenance. A pair of coaches and 21 swimmers make up this year's roster. OSU will honor those scholarships. (link)
North Dakota State's FB team visited the White House yesterday in recognition of its FCS national championship. 110 players and 40+ coaches and staff made the trip and dined on burgers and pizza. After a photo session with President Trump and a tour of the Oval Office the group headed to the U.S. Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial for some additional sightseeing. Photo gallery included. (link)
Also Noticed: Updated MBB comparative data, remember to check back every afternoonish. (link); Auburn FB HC Malzahn and nearly 30 student-athletes helped deliver supplies on Monday to Providence Baptist Church in Beauregard, Alabama to help those affected by the severe tornadoes that devastated parts of Alabama and Georgia over the weekend. The Tigers MBB team plays Alabama tonight and both HCs of those programs are working to find a way to use the game to help victims, as well. (link); The Pittsburgh MBB Twitter account posted a teaser for a potential Nike announcement, alluding that April 7 could be the day we see new apparel. Will the throwback colors make their appearance permanently? (link); Notre Dame FB adds Marshall to the home slate for 2022. (link); Details emerge on the Georgia vs. Texas FB home-and-home series. Each team can purchased 5K tickets when it is the road team and the visiting squad gets a $500K guarantee. $1M cancellation fee for the first game or $2M for the second. (link); Cincinnati and IMG College Licensing announce that Hanesbrands will serve as the primary licensee for apparel products. Among the perks, "the agreement provides the University a minimum guarantee that ensures more than a 20% growth in apparel royalties following the 8% growth the University experienced over the past three years." The Bearcats will continue their partnership with Under Armour as the exclusive supplier of uniforms and apparel for the teams, coaches and staff.
