PHOTO OF THE WEEK

“I am sure the good people of Canterbury Hockey Club are bursting with pride…..”

This is what The Top of the D (a hockey publication) wrote last week about Lizzie Neal’s first international goal for Great Britain in the FIH ProLeague match vs China last weekend.

We are indeed all so very proud of Lizzie Neal and also Grace Balsdon – two of our home grown players currently representing Great Britain in the senior ladies squad. They, like many of our elite players, started their hockey careers on Sunday mornings as ‘Minis’ at Canterbury Junior Hockey Club, and they have played their part as great club members as they progressed playing through the age groups, volunteering, ball patrolling, coaching, and of course playing top level ladies hockey.  We are fortunate that we have so very many current and ‘old’ juniors of all standards who participate in club life both on and off the pitch and make our hockey family at Canterbury one of the very best – so yes, we are bursting with pride…..every day!

MATCH REPORTS
U8 Bears

With a few players missing from the initial squad. 6 outfield players and Rosie in goal, 60 minutes (5 matches) of hockey on half a pitch with no subs was definitely going to be a tough day.

They started with a loss against a reasonable Folkestone side.

There next game again was against Folkestone this time they started more positively and for the whole match camped by the Folkestone goal. A great win.

Now to face the very good Canterbury side and unfortunately couldn’t take their chances this time. Rosie once again produced some great saves but they had to settle for second place.

The last two games they showed great character and their efforts were rewarded with 2 wins

final result; .Won 3 Lost 2

They should be very proud of themselves in the way they fought for everything, worked hard and definitely another massive improvement from the last tournament.
Well done

U8 Wolves

On a wet windy day in Folkestone the Wolves were not put off their scent!  Playing against 3 teams from Folkestone and 2 others from Canterbury, the team lived up to their name and played as a pack, working together extremely well.

Every player worked hard and listened well (big bonus for the coach), and as the games went on the hockey got better and better. There was some very strong defending from Wilf and Eleanor, and a few good saves from Oliver T in goal. Some good runs through the midfield from Oliver A, Oscar, and Afraz, with some sweet goals scored by Emily, Max and Jack.

Five games played with five wins and 16 goals scored, that’s a pretty good day on the field. Well done to everyone.

U8 Foxes

A determined effort from the Foxes in unpleasant conditions saw us collect two wins, one draw and fall to two defeats.

Our first game was against Folkestone Falcons, which, despite dominating, ended in a 1v1 draw. The hosts scoring a superbly taken break-away goal having spent most of the game soaking up Canterbury pressure, including numerous line-stops by a solid Folkestone defence.

The second game we were totally over-run by a strong Canterbury Wolves team, running out the wrong end of a 6v0 scoreline.

A chance to regroup saw the Foxes come back strong and played some super hockey in beating Folkestone Flags 2v0.

Next up was the Folkestone Flames. Another strong performance from the Foxes saw a strong 2v1 win.

The final game of the morning was against Canterbury Bears. An even game of end-to-end hockey saw us lose 2v1.

Despite being wet and cold, the players didn’t give up or even slow down. The Foxes showed excellent concentration and commitment; not easy in such conditions. Every player made a valuable contribution. Evie Pritchard, Lydia Keir and Beaulieu Burden defended well. Honor Leberl, Oliver Goode, Rory Tutt and Sophie Henemann marshalled the midfield like seasoned pro’s, with Howie Baker and Morgan Abbott menacing up front!

Special mention to the Foxes parents who endured the weather without the warming benefits of running around and somehow managed to retain their smiles and good humour. Thank you!

Note: Oliver Goode is absent from the team photo

U10 Pumas

The Pumas had a good morning in Folkestone, despite the weather. The boys played some nice hockey, once we had the sleepy first game out of the way
(against Sevenoaks) they got into their stride and put together some good attacking plays.

A draw against Folkestone followed, despite numerous chances, Canterbury were unable to get that elusive second goal to get the win, 5 more minutes and we would have had it!!! The win came in the next game, beating Ashford 1-0, which was well deserved. With the aid of Ollie Triggs in goal (stolen from the U8s), the Pumas put up a good fight against the Folkestone Flyers, with shots saved off the line and a great diving save from Triggs, and were unlucky to lose.

Determined to finish on a high, the team stepped up for the last game and beat Sevenoaks 1-0.

A great team performance with some great defending all over the pitch, good tackling from Cian, Thomas, Edward W, and Harry great work rate from Alfie and Harry who were everywhere, and good team goals finished by  Edward, Goodenough, Alfie, Jude and Aidan. And a big thanks to Oliver Triggs for stepping in as keeper.

U10 Boys Tigers

The weather was dreadful for the Holcombe tournament, but it was to be a dream start for the Canterbury Tigers with victories over the Holcombe Harriers (2-0) and the Blackheath Bengals (1-0).  All three goals came in broadly the same formula.  Solid defence (Myles, Piers, Ben), good wide distribution from midfield (Connor, Nick, Teddy, Oscar), an attack down the right wing (Arthur) followed by clinical finishing (Heath).

In the third match the Tigers faced the Blackheath Bears, who were typically bigger and stronger – indeed more bearlike – than our Tigers.  We fought well, but struggled with our structure and wished we had a keeper as Blackheath fired shots at our goal.  The final score was a deserved 4-0 to Blackheath.

The Tigers finished the tournament with a great dual against the Holcombe Hawks.  An early goal from Heath, again latching on to a cross from the right, took some pressure away, and this was followed by a scrambled goal five minutes later.  The Hawks refused to give up and put the Tiger’s defence under real pressure, scoring a goal and forcing a number of goal line saves.  The final score was 2-1 to Canterbury.

All in all this was a very encouraging performance from a young team facing opposition who all had keepers:
  • Myles and Piers were excellent in defence with well timed tackles, clearances and intelligent reading of the game
  • Great pace, 3d skills and crosses from Arthur
  • Superb finishing and workrate from Heath who really was on fire
  • Great tackling from Oscar, who also gets the bravery award for bouncing back after a nasty blow
  • Strong tackling and some good runs on the ball from Teddy
  • Great stickwork, runs and distribution from Connor who played at times attack, midfield and defence
  • Hardwork, alongside nifty stickwork and passing from Nick
  • Ben stepped up playing a decisive role as a defensive centre midfield, always in the game
Goals: Heath (5)

Man of the Match: Myles Padfield for robust and consistent defending

U12 Girls

On a very wet and windy Sunday, the U12s girls went to Tonbridge School to play in a triangular against Tunbridge Wells and Marden.  Despite the miserable weather, the girls arrived ready to play some good hockey and enjoy themselves.  The first game was against Marden Apples and both teams started well and put pressure each other’s defences.  Both teams held firm, and despite some excellent play, the score remained 0-0.

A rest game gave everyone the chance to talk through some tactics for the next game.  There was no let-up of the rain but the girls went into the next game against Tunbridge Wells Otters ready to try some new things.  Another hard fought match with good chances for both teams saw another 0-0 draw but the girls were getting closer!

Another game off gave us a chance to pick out the positives and look to build on those in the next game against Marden Pears.  It all clicked this time and the scoring was opened by Miriam Thorpe when the opposition allowed her into the D to shoot – 1-0 to Canterbury!  Tails were up and the passing and moving became confident with more pressure being applied to the Marden goal.  They couldn’t keep the girls out and Lucy Carter popped in a well-earned second goal.  Freya Sonnen then stepped up from defence for a penalty corner and, with a smart finish, scored our third for a classy 3-0 win.  Celebratory Jelly Babies all round.

The last game against TW Bears finished with another 0-0 draw.  Great attacking from Chloe Solley and Lucy Carter up front, lots of running from Eleanor Griffin, Kate Boffey, Miriam Thorpe and Poppy Gault in midfield, strong, confident defending from Izzy Kitson and Freya Sonnen at the back and a four-game clean sheet from Neave Jeffery-Fox in goal meant the team performance throughout the morning was fantastic.  Everyone listened so well, tried hard to implement what we discussed and put in the work rate all morning. Well done everyone.

Sorry, no photos, it was too wet!

U12 Girls Triangular

It was a wet and windy morning at Polo Farm with Canterbury U12 girls fielding four teams. The weather didn’t put any of the girls off and they played with grit and determination all morning.

All the teams took a while to warm up but once into their flow we saw strong passing, good positional play and some great attacks in the opposition D. Notably all the girls had a never give up attitude with some amazing defensive play with several saves on the line as none of the Canterbury teams had goal keepers.

A great mornings hockey with full commitment from all the players in pretty horrible conditions. Well done all and thank you to the parents for supporting us.

Results:
Panthers: 2 loses and 4 draws
Tigers: 4 loses and 1 draw
Leopards: 1 win, 3 draws and 1 loss
Lions: 4 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw

U12 Boys Triangular

What a difference a week makes.  Last Sunday it was all about taking on water due to the lovely weather, this week it was about trying to stay warm between matches.  Luckily a morning trip to Ashford was accompanied by a clubhouse serving hot coffee and bacon rolls.  Just like being at Polo….Anyway, the U12 boys took 2 teams to the triangular tournament, which also featured two teams from Ashford and two teams from Holcombe.

The Jaguars had a very good morning, winning all their games except one and scoring a good number of goals in the process.  The team looked good going forward and finished the tournament very strongly with an impressive 6-0 win.  The only defeat came against a strong Ashford first team, when the Jaguars were without a keeper.  Overall a good showing, but still some aspects to work on for next week’s county tournament when hopefully we will be able to exact some revenge on Ashford.

The Panthers had a more up and down day, playing some lovely hockey at times, but not quite taking their chances when they arose. We drew the first game against Holcombe 2, quickly equalising after the opposition had taken the lead.  The boys then fought well against the three strongest teams, before losing all of the games narrowly.  In all these games Daniel Luckhurst produced some superb saves, keeping us in the games and always giving us a chance to snatch a result.

As we huddled in the clubhouse preparing for the final game it was fantastic to see a real desire to finish the tournament strongly and pick up a win.  The rain had finally subsided (allowing the players with glasses to actually see the ball) and the team produced a really dominant performance to beat the Ashford Bears 2-0.  Both goals were really well taken, and resulted from two lovely moves where the ball was moved quickly and passed to players in space.  A great way to finish the morning.

Many thanks to Ray Newell and Thomas L-C for looking after the Panthers, as well as to all the parents for showing their wholehearted support for the boys in quite miserable conditions.

JAGUARS:  Ollie McMullan, Freddie Bickley (1), Archie Burden (1), Martin Long-Castro (2), Regan Newman Collins (1), Jasper James (1), Thomas Newell (5)

U14 Girls  v Oxted

On Sunday 24th February, the U14 girls travelled to the prestigious grounds of Woldingham School in Surrey and played against Oxted on a glorious spring sunny day.

A great dominant start from Canterbury with positive passing between Evie, Iona and Poppy, leading to a short corner which was unsuccessful after several attempts. Canterbury then regained control with a break down the right wing, Iona crossing the ball and Poppy scoring the first goal within the first five minutes.

Oxted then made their way forward, which was quickly stopped by Lorna to clear from defence. A great pass from Irmak who had gone down the wing to Poppy, taking the ball past two defenders and popped it pass the goalie scoring her second goal in the 8th minute.

Within a minute, Jess made a strong run down the right wing passing to Evie, crossing to Poppy who shot for goal but unfortunately missed.

Three minutes later with dominant play, Canterbury were back in the Oxted D with Evie find the back of the goal making 3-0.

The girls continued to dominate the play within the Oxted D, with Oxted occasionally clearing the ballot meet a strong Canterbury defence. Many short corners followed for Canterbury but none coming into fruition.

The second half started with Oxted in a different gear. After some end to end hockey Georgina made a fantastic save! Evie had 3 attempts at goal, Jess and Sophie made some exceptional long runs , with Abi eventually scoring out of open play the 4th goal.

We then saw another long run from Becky in defence take the ball up to the Oxted D, leaving Canterbury with another two chances to score. Against the run of play, Oxted were successful in scoring a soft goal with 9 minutes remaining.

This woke Canterbury up, resulting in short corner only to find the side board. Canterbury persevered, with Evie finding the 5th goal and 3 minutes later connected with a crossing ball to score her hat trick.

Overall Canterbury showed strong play dominating in all areas and after more short corners than we could count, were unlucky not to come away with double figures.

Final score Canterbury 6, Oxted 1.

Coach Fabrizio named Poppy Ladd player of the match. Well done Poppy and well done team.

U16 Girls - Kent Girls League

Our spirits were not the highest when we started, having no goalie, no substitutes and very bad weather - however, we were determined to overcome this.  We played against Tunbridge Wells who were a strong team.  They scored first and were in the lead at Half Time, 3-1.  Our first goal was scored by Issy Mount.

In then second half we co-operated more, running forward into the D when we were in possession of the ball and getting back when we weren't.  There were some spectacular saves on our side to make up for not having a goalie and we went on to score four more goals (Ella, Clara, Hannah and Rebecca) with Tunbridge Wells only one more.

Player of the match goes to Ella Jain for her hard work in playing in the game/acting as goal keeper,  as well as some excellent passes. A special mention goes to Rebecca for stepping up from the U14's to help us out, playing very well and giving us a goal!  Additionally, well done to Hannah - the newest player in the U16's - for her first goal with Canterbury.

Final score: 5/4 to Canterbury.

Report; Clara Nagle

No GK, no subs and no sign of the cold weather holding off but an outstanding performance by all involved. I think the girls have come a long way since the start of the season and this match sums it up. Well done all!

Shout out to Ella, Catriona and Clara for their huge performances today.

HUGE thanks to Chris Martin for his umpiring services.

Jack Rolfe

The result means we still top the table at present in this league with 12 points having played 5 games so far in this league this season - winning 4 and losing 1 - with 24 goals for and only 9 against. Great work girls!
