THE HIGHLIGHTS

China hasn’t forgotten about Huawei.

THE BACKGROUND.

You’ve been hearing about Huawei for years. We’ll remind you. Huawei’s the Chinese telecommunications biz that’s been labeled a national security threat by the US gov. Hint: it’s done things like ignore sanctions on Iran and allegedly conspire to steal American trade secrets. Plus rolling out new tech that the US says can be used to spy on users. You know, little things like that. Back in January, the US officially indicted Huawei - coming weeks after Canada arrested the biz’s CFO. To which China said ‘how about we arrest two Canadians?’ Scene, set.

THE HAPPENINGS.

China wants to hit ‘update’ on this story. Yesterday, the gov said ‘you know those two Canadians we arrested? They’re thieves’ and accused them of stealing state secrets. Yes, really. This comes as China’s reportedly prepping a lawsuit against the US gov over a law that keeps Huawei off the American shelf.

THE HAPPENINGS PT 2.

Speaking of lawsuits, Huawei’s CFO (yes, the one arrested by Canada) is suing the Canadian gov for apparently violating her constitutional rights by detaining and interrogating her. Unclear how far this will get in court, but it marks how the world’s battle over Huawei is now bigger than ever. All of this comes as Prezes Trump and Xi Jinping are planning on meeting up to talk the trade war - another prettyyyy tense topic. Suspense, thick.

SO…?

Over the past couple years, the US’s relationship with China has continued to fall apart. TBD on how it’ll be affected by these latest events.

THE ACTION

POLITICS: Yesterday, 21 states said ‘hmmm, no’ and sued the Trump team over new rules on abortion. Reminder: one of Trump’s biggest campaign promises was to crack down on abortion. Aka make it harder for people to have access to an abortion. So recently, the Trump team intro’d new rules that’d block doctors from recommending abortions - along with take federal funding away from clinics that don’t properly separate abortion services from the rest of the clinic. Now, 21 states are suing and saying these new rules violate Obamacare policies. In other news, House Dems just sent out 81 letters as part of a new investigation into allegations that the Prez obstructed justice. Stay tuned.

WORLD: All eyes are on Venezuela. Recently, Juan Guaido said ‘I fear nothing’ and returned to Venezuela after violating a travel ban - something that could result in his arrest. Quick refresher: pretty much the whole world hates Venezuela’s current prez - Nicolas Maduro. So weeks ago, the country’s opposition leader - Guaido - swore himself in as interim prez. Over the past couple days, he’s been traveling to Venezuela’s neighbors to chat with their leaders - plus Vice Prez Mike Pence. Now, he faces arrest. No word yet on this from Maduro. Speaking of which, a second Canadian cabinet minister just resigned after it came out that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tried to cover up a criminal case. Not good, eh.

PEOPLE: Yesterday, it came out that a London patient may have become the second person ever to be cured of HIV. You read that right. This comes over a decade after the first person was cured of HIV - using the same method, which treats patients with stem cell transplants from donors who have a resistance to HIV. Meanwhile, people around the world are mourning the death of Luke Perry after the 52 year old actor suffered a massive stroke. Perry was known for playing Dylan on “Beverly Hills 90210” and Archie’s dad on “Riverdale” - to name a few. Celebrities and fans alike took to Twitter to remember him.

WHAT TO KNOW

$878 million:” the largest single-winner Mega Millions jackpot ever. It was just claimed by an anonymous person. BRB, taking a crying break.

SAY WHAT?

“Purely theoretical” - a reporter, reassuring everyone that this new March Mammal Madness bracket doesn’t actually pit real animals up against each other. Whew.
