March Write Then Socialise

Hi everyone,

Comes around quickly doesn't it? March's Write Then Socialise is nearly with us already!

Saturday, March 23rd from 10.30am - 2.30pm, in the cafe area upstairs at the Rochester Community Hub is where we'll be, although we'll be in Miss Twinkleton's Cafe opposite the hub from around 9.30am.

As advised previously, April's WTS will form part of The Turtle Moves, and we've a bonus.

Local writer Kerry Hancock will join us to share the story of her journey to published author, with a chat and Q&A between 11am-12noon.  Born and raised in Medway, her first book - a fantasy adventure entitled 'The Task' - is due for release this year and was a pretty whirlwind process.

Read on for full details of The Turtle Moves.

The Turtle Moves

Due to various requests, we're delighted to mark Sir Terry Pratchett's birthday with a World Building Workshop, as part of The Turtle Moves event on Saturday, April 27th.

The ability to create a whole new world is the basis of great fantasy writing. JRR Tolkien, George RR Martin and of course, Sir Terry Pratchett (yes, I was tempted to stick RR in there) set a very high bar that all writers must strive for when planning their fantastical stories.

Join us as Ben Slythe - using examples from Discworld - takes us step by step into a world populated by anything and everything your imagination can dream up. There have to be rules, as Terry Pratchett explains:

"You are allowed to make pigs fly, but you must take into account the depradations on the local bird life and the need for people in heavily flown over areas to carry stout umbrellas at all times".

Tickets for the workshop are £8 and can be booked here.

Where and When:

Room 11 at the Medway Adult Education, Rochester Community Hub.

1.30pm - 3.30pm, Saturday, April 27th.

It will follow the Juvenile Crafters' Guild which will take place between 10.30am - 12.30pm.

April's Write Then Socialise will also take place the same day, from 10am-1pm in the cafe next door. There will be space in Room 11 for parents who wish to write while their children are crafting. And now, we have the bonus of a talk with fantasy writer, Kerry Hancock, which will also be in Room 11.

No tickets are required for the Juvenile Crafters' Guild, Kerry's talk  or Write Then Socialise.

For those who weren't aware, 'Write Then Socialise' is a nationwide initiative we're delighted to bring to Rochester. It's aimed at getting writers writing but also bringing them together to chat, as we all know it can be a lonely business. The idea is to write for a couple of hours, then chat. Or chat first or while you're writing - it's very informal and entirely up to you.

The venue:
Both events take place at Rochester Library and Adult Education Community Hub. It's a couple of minutes walk from Rochester train station, with long stay car parks a few minutes walk the other way, opposite the old Rochester train station. The Cafe area is actually open till 4pm, if you wish to stay on and write more. Just remember to sign in at reception on arrival, for fire safety.

All the best,
Jaye

The Rochester Literature Festival is a voluntary, community and non-profit making organisation run by writers for readers, writers and like minds.

We aim to bring writers, performers, musicians, directors, producers and film makers together, anyone, in fact, whose work has creative writing at its heart. We want to expand the horizons of the many diverse communities in Medway, and collaborate with like minded folk to do that.

Our aim is to prove that literature is for everyone and can bring a community together, to learn from each other and experience great multi-arts activities and entertainment together to aid community spirit and wellbeing.

We want to engage our audiences with a superb mix of traditional and innovative literary events, full of imagination and flair. And we believe passionately that were Medway a book, it would be an epic tale in a genre all its own!
