Carpentries in Libraries
On March 6, 21:00 UTC (check your local time), Carli Spina will be speaking about “Universal Design for Learning” to teach in a manner that is accessible and inclusive of those with disabilities and who use assistive devices. Carli is an Associate Professor and the Head of Research & Instructional Services at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. Join her at this Library Carpentry Community Call.
Themed Community Call
Join Megan Guidry, our Regional Coordinator for New Zealand, on March 11, 13:00 NZDT (check your local time), for a themed Community Discussion on the topic “The Carpentries in New Zealand.” In this session, we will share a historical view of The Carpentries in New Zealand, an update on workshops being held, and discuss how you can host workshops in New Zealand. Community News
Work with The Carpentries!
The Carpentries activities in Africa have been growing through exemplary volunteer work of the community and outstanding workshop coordination and community leadership from Anelda van der Walt. We are now looking to hire a Regional Coordinator who will continue this work and support the community and workshops as activity in Africa grows. This position will join our team of Regional Coordinators to lead growth of The Carpentries community across the African continent, with a focus on Southern Africa. Read more and apply here.
Committee and Task Force News
CarpentryCon TaskForce
The CarpentryCon 2020 Task Force will soon be releasing their Bid Forms for venues and theme suggestions. Each individual in the Task Force has identified areas of responsibility that they will be leading as co-chairs. Meet them in an upcoming Community Call on 19 March 2019 to share your ideas about venue and theme and help them plan the next community conference.
Workshop Administrators
The Workshop Administrators do more than just organize workshops. They help build local communities and represent The Carpentries at a regional level. We are happy to announce that their title will now be Regional Coordinators to best reflect on the work they do. Community members can connect with their Regional Coordinators via our newly launched Regional Portals, where they can also learn about upcoming events, workshops, and Instructors in their regions.
Executive Council
The 2019 Executive Council recently held its first meeting with members elected in December. In the second year of governance for the Carpentries, they are streamlining their communications and operations and discussing logistical issues. In particular, they will schedule an in-person meeting for the EC after April to discuss the status of the Carpentries after its first year of governance and develop strategic planning for the next few years.
Code of Conduct Committee
After releasing the revised Code of Conduct, the committee saw that updates to our reporting guidelines and enforcement manual were needed as well. The Executive Council authorized a small committee to make updates to these documents and to our Incident Response Procedure. After a ‘request for comments’ period and helpful feedback from the community members, the documents have now been revised and published in our handbook. Read more in this blog post.
Library Carpentry Community
The Library Carpentry Maintainers met online during the week of 14-17 January 2019. They started the process of updating current Library Carpentry lessons such as Intro to Data and SQL, and are developing new lessons from Wikidata to Digital Preservation. Meanwhile, Curriculum Advisory Committee (CAC) members are looking at how Library Carpentry workshops and lessons are structured. These updates, along with their Top 10 FAIR resource list, were shared with the community in the last community call on 28 February 2019.
What you may have missed on the blog and mailing lists
On The Carpentries Slack #general channel, community members discussed the need for ‘workshops follow-up events’ such as hacky-hour and study-groups to facilitate continual learning and practice. On the Topicbox Discuss list people shared ideas on how to find data to use in open science teaching demos, and how OpenRefine can be used even with changes to Java licenses.
