ATRI RESEARCH LINKS CONGESTION WITH FUEL, EMISSIONS
NATIONAL - The American Transportation Research Institute today released a case study that quantifies how improvements to our nation’s highway infrastructure can help conserve fuel and reduce emissions. Nationally, congestion is estimated to have increased the trucking industry’s fuel consumption by 6.87 billion gallons in 2016; adding an additional $15.74 billion to its fuel bill. In this newly-released analysis, ATRI estimated the fuel consumption and emissions impacts of congestion at one of the worst traffic bottlenecks in the country, the interchange of I-285 and I-85 in Atlanta, Georgia; known locally as Spaghetti Junction. The research combined ATRI’s unique truck GPS database to determine vehicle speeds by time of day, daily trip counts collected by the Georgia Department of Transportation, and emissions factors derived from the U.S. EPA’s state-of-the-science emissions model.

CLOSING IN ON ELECTRONIC LOGGING DEADLINE
NATIONAL – Operators have 286 days left to comply with the Electronic Logging Device mandate announced two years ago by the Congress and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. ELDs replace Automatic Onboard Recording Devices (AOBRD). Ray Martinez, head of FMCSA, called for fleets to plan and implement this transition from AOBRDs to ELDs “as soon as you possibly can,” and expressed concern that the bulk of AOBRD users might wait until the final quarter of the year to make the change.

NEBRASKA WINS THIRD STRAIGHT AWARD FOR MOST PROJECTS PER CAPITA
NEBRASKA - Site Selection magazine has awarded Nebraska its third-straight Governor's Cup for the most economic development projects per capita -- with 118 projects in 2018. This marks the fourth time that Nebraska has captured the cup. The magazine notes that qualified projects are those with "a minimum investment of $1 million, creation of 20 or more new jobs, or 20,000 square feet or more of new space." Site Selection's story quotes Gov. Pete Ricketts as saying, "This year, one of the things we have to get done is revamping our Nebraska Advantage incentive system -- not that I wouldn't take the opportunity to try to reduce our income tax, but we're really focusing on our incentives system to make it simpler, more transparent, easier to use and focused more on higher-wage jobs." Meanwhile, Texas won its seventh-straight Governor's Cup for most projects overall, coming in with 608 last year.(photo courtesy Office of the Governor)
