March Update

High quality grapes but lower yields reported as harvest ramps up

WGCSA Councillors from across the state are keeping me up to date with the latest information as they hear back from growers about their harvest.

Once again, growers can be proud of the high quality grapes produced across the state. South Australia continues to lead the way in producing quality grapes for quality wine.

Every region has a different yield story. Some regions have said they are down five percent, others 20 percent on the 10-year average. We will do a full wrap of the state's harvest once the dust settles!

Millipedes - An unwanted visitor in vineyards

As vintage continues across the state, you might have noticed a few unwanted visitors in amongst your grapes. The black Portuguese millipede is a common sight around the house and relatively harmless. But did you know that millipedes may cause damage to grape berries and wine taint if they are fermented with grapes at harvest?

Luckily our resident viticulture expert Mary Retallack has some management tips so growers are better able to manage the impact of millipedes in their vineyard.

Grape grower the first industry representative invited to attend PIRSA Talent Development program

Nicole Clark, a fifth-generation vigneron, with her husband Chris Clark at the brand new Kimbolton Wines cellar door in Langhorne Creek.

WGCSA nominated you to participate in the PIRSA Development Program, can you tell us about the program?

The program was designed for leadership training, which had us thinking about what we did in our working day and how can we better ourselves.  As a group, we were tasked with exploring the topic – how can we further strengthen the relationship between PIRSA and industry.  The program was a great example of PIRSA and industry sharing knowledge as part of the learning environment where we could explore the needs of both industry and PIRSA and how we can work together collaboratively in an effective manner. This was the first time in which anyone from industry was invited to participate in the Talent Development program.

What do you think was the biggest benefit of your involvement in the program?
Looking deeply into all aspects of my working day.  My personal values, time management, staff management to name a few.  It was great to stop and look at the big picture and to look at ways in which I can be more efficient, productive and become an industry leader.

Also having a better understanding on how PIRSA operates and the many different departments within.

How has participating in the program impacted your business?
Have built some great relationships within PIRSA, and has shown me ways in which I can better use the facilities that are available to my business and the Langhorne Creek Wine Region.  As to time management, that’s still being worked on!!

What would be your advice to growers considering participating in a similar program?
Whilst sometimes it is easier to say no to these types of opportunities as we are all busy in our day to day jobs,  I would highly recommend participating in this program.

One step closer to repeal of labour hire licensing

On 28 November 2018, the South Australian Attorney-General introduced the Labour Hire Licensing Repeal Act 2018 (the Repeal Bill) to repeal the Labour Hire Licensing Act 2017 following extensive lobbying and representation, including from the South Australian Wine Industry Association (SAWIA).

The Repeal Bill was passed by the House of Assembly on 27 February 2019. It is currently before the Legislative Council (Upper House) were the Government must win the support of the cross-bench to successfully pass the Repeal Bill into law.

SAWIA is continuing our lobbying and advocacy efforts, speaking to members of the South Australian Parliament about the importance to the wine industry of the Repeal Act being passed.

SAWIA expects the Repeal Act to be debated and voted on in the Legislative Council in April or May.

ABC Online reported on the interesting ways growers across SA are coping with recent weather events. WGCSA Business Manager, Lisa Bennier, also provides an insight to the start of vintage 2019.

South Australian wine grape growers are getting creative to protect their crops from the elements, after months of extreme weather conditions in the state

Extreme weather events — including two hailstorm events, severe frost and the state's hottest day on record earlier this year — wiped out parts of South Australia's grape crops.

Get organised for vintage with delivery despatch dockets

Growers can now buy their own delivery docket books – saving costs, reducing mistakes and improving record-keeping and communication between growers, wineries and transporters.

These standardised delivery dockets have been developed by Australian Vignerons with support from WGCSA, in response to grower requests for a convenient option that can be used when wineries don’t supply their own form.

It complies with transport, quarantine and
label integrity legislation.  The dockets are available from WGCSA and cost $11 (including postage) per book of 25 forms in triplicate.

Rootstock Selector tool highlights solution to tricky rootstock selection

Wine Australia has released an upgraded Grapevine Rootstock Selector tool that will arm Australia’s winegrape growers with enhanced knowledge about the rootstocks that suit their individual vineyards.

Planting rootstocks can provide viticultural benefits as well as provide protection against known risks to vine health such as phylloxera and nematodes. The free Grapevine Rootstock Selector tool has refined the vineyard selection criteria and highlights phylloxera tolerance among the identified rootstocks to ensure that growers can better determine the rootstock that will best suit their vineyard.

Wine Australia General Manager Research, Development and Extension Dr Liz Waters said the Grapevine Rootstock Selector brought together knowledge from Australian and international research in a single, easy-to-use, independent resource for the Australian grape and wine community.

‘Working with CSIRO research scientists Dr Rob Walker and Peter Clingeleffer, the Grapevine Rootstock Selector has been thoroughly revised, updating knowledge from many years of scientific research from Australia and overseas with the latest information about the specific characteristics of different rootstocks’, Dr Waters said.
