Chris' Physio Condition of the Month

Lateral Hip Pain

Lateral Hip pain is a common condition affecting up to 25% of Australians at any given time. It used to be called trochanteric bursitis but more recent studies are showing that it is likely more related to irritation of the tendons on the outside of the hip that attach nearby. It is more common in women than men and is more prevalent in the over 50’s.

Do I Have Lateral Hip Pain?

An accurate diagnosis from a physiotherapist discussing the history of your pain and who performs a detailed examination is the easiest way to identify this. You most likely have pain around the bony prominence on the side of your hip that may be tender to touch. It is common to also have back pain or pain radiating somewhat down your thigh.

Treatment

Studies performed at the University of Queensland have shown that a combination of education and rehabilitation are better than steroid injections for this kind of pain. You will need to start a physiotherapist led exercise program to strengthen your muscles and tendons and improve control around your hip. This pain is most commonly related to some form of overuse so it’s important to look at how you are loading your tendon.

If this sounds similar to your symptoms, come and see our physio, Chris. Chris will provide you with an assessment, a proper diagnosis and will likely commence you on an appropriate exercise program.

You can book online with Chris or call us on 3846 4800.

Continuing Professional Development Update
Over the last couple of months, both Kent and Katrina have presented to the team on 'Running Dystonia' and 'Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport'.

Running dystonia is a rare form of adult-onset task-specific lower limb dystonia (involuntary muscle contractions causing abnormal movement or posture) that typically presents in long-distance runners. One of the most effective was to treat running dystonia?? Running backwards!

Relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) is the result of insufficient calorie intake and/or excessive energy expenditure. Consequences of this low-energy condition can alter many physiological systems, including metabolism, menstrual function, bone health, immunity, protein synthesis, and cardiovascular and psychological health. This condition can be identified by our team taking a thorough medical history and comprehensive assessment.

Competition Time!!!
With Easter only just around the corner, we thought we would get into the spirit early, and what better way to do this than by eating chocolate!!

Can you guess how many eggs are in the basket??

When you're next in the clinic, simply write down your guess along with your name and contact number and place it in the jar. The winner will be announced the week before Easter.

Go on, have a crack at it!!
