              'Remembering Christchurch'

The Board, Ambassadors and Volunteers of ShelterBox New Zealand send our sincere condolences to all the families whose loved ones lost their lives in the recent terrorist attacks in Christchurch. We send our love and support to those who are injured and recovering from such a senseless act.

With strength, peace and solidarity in our hearts we will all prosper together and unite to overcome such man-made disaster and conflict.

 'INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY'

When disaster strikes, it is women who are left most vulnerable, but despite the odds- women show incredible resilience and strength.

This is Janielley. She is an 18-year-old student who has been volunteering with ShelterBox in the Philippines to help gather feedback from families who have received our aid.

To celebrate International Women's Day, we asked Janielley which woman inspires her the most, watch our video and listen to her reply....

'CHEQUE THIS OUT!'

The Cambridge Rotary Youth Team recently organised a 'Movie Night' to raise funds for ShelterBox. Three of the team members were invited along on Saturday, 16th March to the District 9930 Conference, where they were able to present a cheque for $1,500.

Past Rotary International Director Don Mebus very kindly received their donation on behalf of ShelterBox New Zealand. Very well done to Youth Director Ian Grant and all the Youth Team at Cambridge Rotary! Your donation will go a long way to ensure that no family is left without shelter.

'INTERACTING WITH SHELTERBOX'

Interact students from Whakatane High School paid a visit to the District 9930 Rotary Conference recently which was held in Hamilton. The students were there to participate in the conference and afterwards managed to view a few of the exhibits in the Rotary Showcase.

The Whakatane Rotary and their Interact club have been great supporters of ShelterBox having recently raised funds for two ShelterBoxes.  Great job!

                       'SYRIA  -  8 YEARS ON'

Our partners help us provide aid in some of the most dangerous conflict zones around the world. In Syria, we're working with Hand in Hand for Aid and Development, ReliefAid and Bahar Organisation to get our aid to those who need it the most.

But what motivates these extraordinary individuals to risk their lives to deliver aid in such dangerous circumstances?

AT LEAST 80,000 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN FORCED FROM THEIR HOMES AFTER FLOODING HIT MALAWI IN EARLY MARCH, INTENSIFIED BY CYCLONE IDAI.

According to the UN, this devastating cyclone may be the worst ever disaster to hit the southern hemisphere.  Thousands of families urgently need shelter and support.

Floods have affected almost 1 million Malawians and forced at least 125,000 from their homes.

Please consider donating today to help families around the world recover from natural disaster.

                       'CYCLONE IDAI APPEAL'

Right now, we are talking to local partners in all the countries affected by Cyclone Idai to understand how we might be able to help. As Rotary International's project partner for disaster relief, we’re in close contact with the District Governor for Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

We're also working with Habitat for Humanity, who are talking to affected families in Malawi.

Your Donation can make a difference, Thank You!

'ALL CHANGE AT SHELTERBOX NEW ZEALAND'

A BIG shout out and thank you to our secretary, Emma Hunt who has recently stepped down from the role. We would like to express our most sincere thanks to Emma for all her hard work and the gracious support that she has given to ShelterBox.

Moving sideways this month is ShelterBox New Zealand Chair, Jackie St John.  Jackie remains on the ShelterBox board and becomes our Immediate Past Chair. Our Vice Chair Guy Cassidy takes over the role of Chair, whilst Board member Claire Achmad steps up into the Vice Chair role.

At the same time, we would like to welcome to ShelterBox New Zealand two new board members, Brent Eddy and Viv Scott.  Welcome to the ShelterBox family!

'FOR SALE  -  LUMINAID  LIGHTS'

We still have a few of our LuminAid solar lights left for sale. They are lightweight, they can float in water and can last up to 16 hours on just one charge.

These lanterns would make a wonderful gift for anyone who loves camping, fishing, sailing or other outdoor activities. They are perfect for summer evenings at the beach or just to keep in your bach for when the electricity breaks down.

Your donation for these lights will not only bring a gift of light to your family, but to a family affected by a disaster somewhere in the world as well.

          'GENDER EQUALITY CAN SAVE LIVES

                            AFTER DISASTERS

While women suffer disproportionately in disaster, they are pivotal in household and community recovery.

Humanitarian crises – whether caused by natural disaster or conflict – hurt women and girls the most. Women and children account for more than 75 percent of refugees and displaced persons globally. They are up to 14 times more likely to die during a natural disaster than men. Furthermore, all forms of violence against women increase during disasters and displacement.

Women’s vulnerability to disasters is not a sign of biological weakness, but of social inequality.
