World TB Day
Tuberculosis (TB) is the world's deadliest infectious disease, claiming over 4,500 lives a day. Each year, we recognize World TB Day on March 24. This annual event commemorates the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced his discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
Most cases in California are from those carrying latent TB infection (LTBI) developing and spreading active TB disease their communities. More than 2,000 cases of TB disease are identified and start treatment in California each year. Approximately 2.5 million Californians have LTBI and are at risk for developing active disease. Of those diagnosed with active TB disease, 80% have reactivated TB infection. Early risk-based screening and treatment can prevent the spread of TB. Below are resources for TB risk assessments and short course (12 dose) therapy for LTBI.

Influenza Report
Influenza activity continues to be widespread in California and in Napa County. In week 10 of 2019, the number of visits related to influenza-like illness (ILI) has risen to 4.6% at Queen of the Valley Medical Center. There have been three confirmed outbreaks, two ICU hospitalizations and two deaths in persons less than 65 years of age.
Patients with ILI symptoms who are hospitalized, severely ill, or at higher risk for complications should be treated as soon as possible with a neuraminidase inhibitor antiviral agent (e.g., oseltamivir, zanamivir) as per CDC and CDPH recommendations, regardless of flu test results. Healthcare providers are also strongly encouraged to continue to vaccinate patients.
For outpatients at lower risk of flu complications, consider testing for influenza using PCR prior to prescribing antiviral treatment. Please note that there will be more false negative rapid influenza tests due to the higher prevalence of influenza in the community.
Healthcare providers should continue to report the following using the Confidential Morbidity Report to the Communicable Diseases Control Program at (707) 299-1499.
- any influenza or acute respiratory illness outbreaks
- lab-confirmed influenza deaths in patients aged 0-64 years
- lab-confirmed influenza ICU cases in patients aged 0-64 years
- RSV deaths in children <5 years of age

Message from Dr. Karen Relucio, Health Officer
The Napa Opioid Safety Coalition has planned several activities on opioid safety available to the community and to healthcare providers. These activities begin in April with film documentaries with facilitated discussions, culminating in the Opioid Safety Town Hall on June 15. The Opioid Town Hall features keynote speaker Retired Admiral Sandy Winnefeld from SAFE Project, who lost his son to opioid overdose.
March also brings World TB Day, with guidance on new short-course therapy for latent TB infection. Persons with LTBI are the largest source of new cases of active TB in California, which is preventable. March also brings continued widespread flu activity.
