Prayer
God of infinite love,
we thank you for this reminder of your love
and your call that we be more patient,
gentle and compassionate with others.
Here in the middle of Lent,
we turn to you to ask for your help and strength.
Please soften our hearts.
Help us to let go of judging others, help us to forgive.
We ask you this, in Jesus' name.
Amen.
Catherine and Marcellin…Pray for us.

Principal's Report

The coming weeks will provide students with a great opportunity to be involved in a range of co-curricular activities from the athletics carnivals and Marist Basketball carnival to mathematics challenges in the Have Sum Fun competition.
The very important Education Conferences for Year 11 and 12 students and their parents will also be held to provide a focus on how each student can maximise their learning and achievement in each of their courses.

PARENT INVOLVEMENT
It has been heartening to see the many parents who have stepped up on both campuses to support the fundraising efforts of our P&F.
With only 17 days to go to the inaugural Mercy Community Fete, our coordinators of the various stalls and activities have reported that they have received many donations and offers of help for their area.
There is still much to be done and I would ask parents and students to read the messages (and open the links) to see what is still required.
Make sure you have marked Sunday 7 April in your calendar to bring family and friends to support this major fundraising venture.
It will be a lot of fun and there will be many bargains.
All proceeds will contribute to the next building project of a gymnasium/classroom complex which will open in 2021.
The Marist campus Art Extraordinaire committee held the first planning session this week for the 2019 event and had a wonderful turnout for this meeting.
It is very pleasing to see parents willing to take on these coordinating roles.
I am sure we can look forward to a wonderful opening night on Friday 18 October 2019.

God bless

New College teacher earns award
One of our new physical education teachers has arrived at Bunbury Catholic College as the winner of a prestigious award.
Ms Liana Perrella, who is based on both campuses, won the Physical Education Studies Teachers’ Association award as the top student from Murdoch University’s graduating class of 2018.
The award is a holistic one and aims to acknowledge university grades, future capabilities and ability to create a community among teachers and fellow university students.
Ms Perrella excelled during the practical components of her five-year double degree in Health and Physical Education plus Sport and Health Science.
She was also selected for an international practicum, which she completed in Phuket.
The awards are given annually by PESTA, which is a Western Australian organisation set up to bring all aspects of PE Studies education together, and acknowledges the top students from each university plus the top high school students and their teachers.

College Activities

International Women's Day
The College held an event and had students participate in another to mark International Women's Day, which took place on Friday 8 March.
For the second straight year, we had a breakfast for our Year 11 girls in the Marist pavilion which featured a guest speaker.
The students, and many female staff members, listened to an insightful and empowering talk from author and Edith Cowan University lecturer Dr Donna Mazza.
On Sunday 10 March, some of our Year 12 female student leaders from both campuses attended the annual Zonta International Women's Day breakfast.
Commander Catherine Hayes from the Royal Australian Navy was the special guest speaker at this event, held at the Sanctuary Golf Resort.

One of our attendees, Mercy campus head girl Kirstyn Kent, shared her experience of the day:
"Along with a group of girls from both the Marist and Mercy campuses, I had the privilege of attending the International Women’s Day breakfast.
The breakfast was wonderful, being able to meet many of the women that made the day possible and enjoy the delicious breakfast provided by the caterers.
The breakfast also provided an opportunity to meet and talk with many of the other head girls from other schools in the Bunbury region.
The theme for the 2019 International Women’s Day was Balance for Better, it was all about making our way towards gender equality.
We learnt more about this theme when we heard from the amazing guest speaker, Commander Catherine Hayes, who spoke about her life in the navy and talked about many life lessons.
Some of these included that the labels we give ourselves don’t define us, being an aunt or a sister or a mum doesn’t define you and your job doesn’t define you, you define yourself.
I am very grateful for this opportunity to learn and experience new things and meet new people as well."
Solar car success
The College had a Year 8 team from each campus compete in last week's Solar Car Challenge.
Our Marist team of Liam George, Christian Higgins, Angus Park and Logan Turner were the South West champions and will now compete in the state finals, being held next month at Optus Stadium in Perth.
Congratulations to both teams on a wonderful effort and we wish the boys all the best for the finals!
Study Skills
The Study Skills program has been offered to Year 10 and 11 students over the past eight years.
Each student chooses a subject to use as an example and the entire course revolves around that, based specifically on the syllabus and the textbook provided.
This means that it is personal to each student and meaningful as it focuses on their present learning.
It comprises four sessions:
- An introductory session where the question, “Why would I need to do Study Skills?” is answered.
- How do I prepare for study? What is my brain doing? The second session looks at mind-mapping and understanding how learning occurs.
- Breaking down information, preparing it for learning and then committing it to memory.
- Revision and creating a Study Plan

This program has proven to be extremely successful for students, particularly ATAR students, as it addresses the increase in learning quantity and how to deal with this pressure.
A number of students have reported over the years how this has assisted them tremendously at university.
Many staff have also reported the benefit of this course to the students and the way it can be utilised in class.
Mr Rory McKenzie

We are very grateful to Mr McKenzie for generously volunteering his time and expertise to help our students improve their study skills and understanding of how to best approach their studies in the senior courses.
Bullying. No Way!
Last Friday was the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence and students supported the ‘Bullying. No Way!’ campaign.
Students were able to buy and wear wrist bands and could also contribute their thoughts on age-specific bullying-related questions and the negative impact of bullying.
Paul Litherland
The College again welcomed cyber safety expert and former police officer Paul Litherland to speak to our community.
He spoke yesterday to the Year 11 and 12 students on both campuses before an evening information session was held at the Mercy campus for all College parents.
Mr Litherland has spoken at the College before and passed on valuable lessons to our students and parents.
Maths Week
We celebrated Maths Week with various activities and quizzes.
Students had the opportunity to win some amazing fruit prizes with our ‘guess the weight’ competition where a watermelon, pineapple and honeydew melon took centre stage.
Canteen vouchers and house points were awarded for guessing the number of counters and dice, furthest paper plane throw and creating equations that equal 1-100 using only the numbers 2, 0, 1 and 9.
Tricky maths questions went out in the daily notices each day and students of all ages submitted correct answers.
Many students took up the opportunity to show off their mathematical prowess. We look forward to continuing this momentum in mathematics.
Maths Week concluded with our Year 11 and 12 students competing in the Have Sum Fun mathematics competition.
Bunbury Catholic College hosted this MAWA event for the first time.
It was a great night in the Marist Learning Commons which concluded with the College teams finishing second, third and sixth.
Thank you to all the parents and staff who made this evening and Maths Week possible, particularly Kate Wright, Alison Lanigan and Trudy Goff.

We raised $179, which will go to Caritas.

Magnificent Mercy
Some of our Mercy students have experienced recent success in the sports they pursue outside the College.
Year 12 student Kyle Lee finished third in the open category of last month's Rottnest Channel Swim.
Kyle was also the 16-19 age category winner of the gruelling 19.7km open water swim and was only beaten overall by two adult competitors.
The performance follows on from Kyle's second place finish in the Busselton Jetty Swim.
Year 11 student Serena Nandapi competed in the senior WA Surf Life Saving Championships in Perth.
She beat strong competition to win the under-17 female beach sprint at the event on Scarborough Beach.
Year 8 student Thomas Cross won two silver medals in the Little Athletics state championships.
He was only narrowly pipped for gold in the under-13 boys 400m running and also finished second in the 800m event.
Thomas, who was the College's only individual champion at last year's SSWA Interschool Athletics carnival, also placed fourth in the under-13 boys 1500m.
Year 10 student Charlotte Haskayne has been selected to train with the Australian Institute of Sport in their future development squad.
Charlotte is a talented boxer who, despite only taking up the sport in the past four years, won a national title in the under-15s last year.
She will head to Adelaide this week to capitalise on this excellent opportunity.
We wish her all the best and congratulate all these students on their sporting achievements!

Athletics carnival
This week the nominations were held for the upcoming BCC athletics carnivals.
Students were able to nominate for the events in which they wished to compete.
This year we are doing away with divisions for events and they will be replaced by heats.
This way, if a student is in Heat 3 or 4, and are the fastest runner, they will still accrue top points for their individual champion, as well as their house.
The athletics carnival is compulsory, like any other school day, and we encourage all students to actively participate.
We will also be running novelty events throughout the day to allow all students to be involved.
More detailed information regarding the procedure for the day will be sent to all parents closer to the date of the carnival.

Sports Star acknowledgement
Big congratulations to Year 7 Mercy student Jack Beech, who has been selected for the Western Australian Karate team.
Jack will be attending the Australasian Karate Championships which will take place in New Zealand in late March and early April.
All the best for the Championships Jack!
Please remember to let us know if your child has made any regional, state or national teams so we can allocate points towards our Sports Star award.

Motocross
Year 7 Marist student Jake Rumens was in Sydney during the past week riding motocross.
He was selected to ride for the Australian Yamaha factory riding team and we congratulate him on this achievement.

Upcoming events
We have a busy three weeks coming up for the remainder of this term with various sporting events happening.
Keep an eye out for updates and information regarding the following events in the Daily Bulletin.

Kim Hughes Shield cricket
The final game of the Kim Hughes Shield saw the Red Caps take on Bunbury Senior High School.
After being sent in on a bowler-friendly wicket, the Red Caps struggled to put big partnerships together, scraping to 129 after some strong batting for the final wicket from Liam Cox and Judd Churcher.
The bowlers got off to a good start and looked to be in a strong position with the opposition still needing more than 50 runs and being eight wickets down.
A few dropped catches let the Bunbury High batsmen off the hook and they took full advantage, taking the win with five balls to spare.
It was a successful Kim Hughes Shield campaign with more than five players making their debut.
The future is very bright with the core of the team looking to be eligible for two more Marist cricket tours.
